Sakamichi no Apollon - Episode 4

Just as expected.

It's no surprise as to why Sakamichi no Apollon is one of the highest-rated series of the season. With each and every episode providing viewers with heartfelt romance and drama, along with the right amount of jazz as an accompaniment, it's very easy immerse oneself in the show. This episode was no different. On top of being able to fit in more jazz music, the episode made me think a lot about the characters, their emotions and everything that is going on now. In a way, the dialogue gave way to other factors such as the visuals and the music, and I felt that this change worked out quite well in the end.

What struck me as the most powerful part of the episode started after Kaoru did the unthinkable by giving in to his desires and stealing Ritsuko's first kiss away from her. After she ran away (he should be glad he didn't get slapped), I think that's when Kaoru knew what he had done and, at that point, things started to go downhill. Kaoru's thoughts when he saw Sentarō and his siblings were a good reminder that rich people don't always have everything, despite seeming like they do. However, when Sentarō revealed his tragic past, I can't imagine how embarrassed Kaoru must have felt. Little did he know, Sentarō's outward appearance was essentially a shell in which he hid his troubled past. Although very old and overused, I think the phrase "Don't judge a book by its cover" really rings true during this scene. To me, the two make a great team as they are able to compliment each other; one has what the other doesn't and vice-versa.

As for the relationships, it's all but official that Yurika will be going after Junichi. What's more is that this might be mutual, seeing as how Junichi also seemed a bit uneasy and nervous when talking to her after the concert. With this in mind, I'm very interested in seeing how Sentarō will react. Will this new development cause the relationship between him and Junichi to weaken? If so, how will this end up affecting the others (i.e. Yurika, Ritsuko, and Kaoru)? Although this episode ended on a positive note, I'm quite sure drama will ensue in the next one.

  1. I was also mesmerised by the opening and ending theme songs. The opening song 'Sakamichi no Melody' was performed by YUKI while the ending song 'Altair' was done by Hata Motohiro. I absolutely love the contrast between both songs. They are definitely loop-worthy! I also like the cover art of the 'Altair' single.
