Ikoku Meiro no Croisée - Episode 2

Yune, don't underestimate the deliciousness of a freshly baked baguette
Episode Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ (4/5)

Another light and heartwarming episode courtesy of Ikoku Meiro no Croisée. As expected Yune's moe level is once again off the charts, inducing many heart attacks and nosebleeds in unsuspecting viewers. Surprisingly, I learned a thing or two about Japanese culture in the episode, including the fact that Japanese people barely consume any dairy products during their meals. I think Yune also learned a lot of French culture this episode, especially when it came to food. This series has exceeded my expectations thus far and I hope it will continue to impress me.

With the title of the episode been "Fromage" (Cheese), there was bound to be some references to food, both French and Japanese. And what do you know, this episode starts off at breakfast, the meal that starts off one's day. As for breakfast preparation, Yune is surprised to see that Oscar is able to complete breakfast in just a few minutes. Compared to the miso soup, rice and fried fish that Japanese people usually have for breakfast, the French breakfast consists of bread, cheese and coffee. Yune also says "Itadakimasu" before eating, which confuses Claude. For those who don't know why Yune did that, read about Japanese etiquette here. Throughout breakfast, Yune struggles to enjoy the food, with the cheese proving to be difficult. Not wanting to waste the cheese, Yune neatly wraps it up and carries it back to her room, hoping that she will be able to finish it later. As the day wears on, Yune spends it observing Claude who is obviously uncomfortable with it. When he finally finishes his work, he decides to go outside with Yune who happily agrees with it. As they stroll down the streets of Paris, they spot a Grand Magasin, which is apparently a building owned by some rich people that want to run the smaller stores out of business; an enemy of the Galerie du Roy. As the two look on at the monstrous building, they spot Oscar there with a random lady that he met. I'm surprised that the old guy still has it in him, if you know what I mean. After the old man comes over to the two and tells Claude that Yune's kimono has been bought by the Blanche family, the same people that own this particular Grand Magasin. Not wanting to keep the lady waiting any longer, Oscar then leaves the two alone again.

Before reaching their destination, Claude assures Yune that, despite the fact that the Blanche family that bought her kimono, he will still buy it back for her no matter what since they made a promise. When they finally reach a large marketplace, Yune is shocked at the large amount of produce being sold there. As they make their way around different food stands, Yune learns about artichokes, mushrooms, raisins, tomatoes, onions and even pumpkins (which she struggled to lift). Once Claude finishes his task of buying bacon, he accompanies Yune for the rest of the day as she explores the marketplace. At the end of the day, after giving some spare change to a man winding a music box, the two pass by a arts store on the way home. For some strange reason, after seeing that a piece of paper costs 15 centimes, Yune walks away from the store quickly. Back at the Enseignes du Roy, Yune begins to peel and prepare some vegetables while Claude finishes up some leftover work. Once done, the two work together to make dinner in the kitchen. After taste test and a little bit of salt, the pot-au-feu is complete. At that moment, Oscar shows up and tries to make excuses as to why he isn't eating out with that lady from earlier when it is obvious that he got dumped. With the three now sitting down at the table, dinner commences. Before the two Frenchmen start eating the soup, Yune surprises them by consuming it without a spoon. After Claude learns from Oscar that Japanese people don't use spoons for their miso soup, he tries to teach Yune how to use one but to no avail. After dinner, Claude continues his work while Yune tackles the cheese again. Unfortunately, she is still unable to eat it.

The next day, Yune is up early once again and, this time, is able to help out as she and Claude make their way to the bakery to buy fresh bread. After buying two and a half baguettes, Yune is surprised at they're warmth and smell. She is even more surprised at the amazing taste once she takes a bite from the piece that Claude ripped off. Back at the Enseignes du Roy, Oscar manages make Yune hate coffee less by adding lots of sugar into it. However, when the topic of her being unable to eat the cheese comes up, Yune stubbornly denies this fact, saying that she will try her best to be able to enjoy it so that she will be able to make food that they like. After hearing her determination, Claude insists that Yune take her time with this as there is no need to rush. After the ED, Yune is shown eating some umeboshi. Shortly after, Oscar joins her and the two enjoy the strange but addicting taste of this treat before exiting the room. Then, Claude comes into view and, after seeing the jar of umeboshi, decides to try one. Unfortunately, since he is not used to its taste, he starts running around the room, looking like he is choking. The episode preview hints at some possible drama in the next episode involving a tsundere-looking ojou-sama. Hopefully, Yune and Claude will be able to overcome this 'obstacle'. Looking forwarf to it.
