Usagi Drop - Episode 1

Did you know: Rin is voiced by a 10-year-old girl
Episode Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ (4/5)

A nice start to what looks to be a very heartwarming anime about the bonding of aunt and nephew where the nephew much older than the aunt. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed this episode although the art in the first part of it threw me off. A part of me thought about dropping it due to the messy looking art alone. Aside from the art, the story is set up well. Now, how will Daikichi's life change with his young aunt now living with him. If you've read reviews/responses about Usagi Drop, I bet you've seen this a million times but I'll write it anyways: Rin is just too moe. Also, that other kid is such an annoying brat.

The artwork starts off really bad, making me already want to stop watching it. Luckily, it the crappy art was only for the introduction part where the grandfather of our 30-year-old male protagonist, Kawachi Daikichi, has passed away. Due to this unfortunate event, Daikichi is now making his way towards the funeral that is being held at the deceased's residence. Upon reaching the front door of the house, Daikichi spots Rin, a blonde-haired girl whom he had never saw before. Before he has the chance to say something, she runs away, towards the back of the house. After entering the house, Daikichi makes his way to the kitchen where his mother is washing dishes. He then questions her about Rin and learns that she is his grandfather's illegitimate daughter. This meant that Rin is his oba-san and his mother's imouto. When Daikichi mentions this fact to his mother, she snaps and tells him to be more aware of the embarrassment and shame that she is feeling now. He then goes to pay tribute to the old man and notices Rin staring at him. However, she immediately runs away after finding out that she was spotted. Soon, other relatives start pouring into the house to pay their respects and conversations about Rin start arising. Later that night, the annoying kid starts to get on my nerves when she takes the cat's cradle that Rin worked on and shows it off to everyone, claiming that she made it. Fortunately, one of the old ladies owns Annoying Reina by telling her to do a four-step ladder (which is probably something after the cat's cradle). As the night drags on, Daikichi offers to let the others sleep while he keeps an eye on the incense. In the end, fatigue got the best of Rin who ended up falling asleep on Daikichi's hand.

The next day, the mourners gather for one last look at Daikichi's grandfather before placing a a white flower on the casket. As expected, Annoying Reina had to ruin this moment of peace and quiet by attempting to throw multiple flowers onto the casket. After that brat gets taken away by her parents, it is Rin's turn for the flower-placing. Instead of using the white flower that everyone is using, she runs outside and, while fighting back tears, returns with two bellflowers. However, she is overcome with grief when she places the flowers on her father's casket and starts crying. With the funeral procedure finished, the family now turns to the problem at hand: Rin. After some discussion as to what they shall do with this girl, Daikichi steps up and asks Rin if she would like to go live with him, shocking everyone else. After hearing his offer, Rin runs towards him, implying that she agrees. With that, Daikichi's life with Rin begins. The short scene after the ED shows the first morning of the two's new life with each other. During breakfast, after she finishes her first bowl of rice, Rin uses her seconds to make onigiri, giving one of them to Daikichi who, after taking a bit out of it, tells her that it tastes good. Quite the heartwarming scene. With the first episode now finished, what lies in store for Rin and Daikichi? All I can do now is wait (and restrain myself from reading the manga). Looking forward to the next episode.
