Hanasaku Iroha - Episode 12

This is my first time seeing someone win so many claw crane prizes
Episode Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ (4/5)

I guess this is the last time we'll see Kou for a while. I, for one, am disappointed in this since I wanted Kou x Ohana all along. It's hard to watch Ohana get the opportunity to be with Kou but waste it on self-loathing. I mean, come on Ohana, the only reason he's helping this much is because he likes you; so you should stop hating yourself for requiring his assistance. On the side, Tohru and Minko's journey through Tokyo's many fine restaurants was fun to watch but seeing Minko suffer made me a bit sick too. My hope for the next episode is that Ohana's mom meets the landlady. That will surely bring a lot of drama.

After a grueling day, Ohana spends the night with Tohru and Minko at a nearby hotel. At 2:02 a.m. the next day, Tohru wakes up to a stiff shoulder due to sleeping while sitting on a chair and sees that Ohana is not in the bed. Upon going downstairs, he sees her and the two begin to talk. A brief moment of silence is followed by Ohana suddenly asking Tohru if he has a girlfriend. Flustered, he stammers a bit before countering with a question of his own: whether Ohana has a boyfriend or not. With her thoughts all messed up, she is unable to answer him and eventually runs off, claiming that she's going to sleep. Throughout all this, it is revealed that Minko was actually eavesdropping on them, bearing a melancholic expression.

The next morning, with surprising amount of energy, Ohana proposes a plan to kidnap her own mother, causing the other two to react with shock. After learning of Ohana's plan, Tohru agrees, but on one condition: that she bring Kou along as well. In the meantime, Tohru invites Minko to go sightseeing with him since it is rare that they even get to visit Tokyo, leaving Ohana to wonder about her course of action. After finally realizing that there was a reason that Tohru asked her to bring Kou too, she heads to the bookstore where Kou works, hoping to find him there. When he isn't there, the cause of all her problems with Kou shows up: the glasses-wearing co-worker of Kou's who has feelings for him, Igarashi Namiko. Through their conversation, Namiko tries to convince Ohana to reject Kou, saying that Kou's heart is being held captive due to having to wait for an answer, despite the fact that he says he's used to it. With her break now over, Namiko leaves Ohana to think about it, telling her that it's all up to her now. Meanwhile, Minko and Tohru are out sightseeing in Tokyo, with Minko thinking that it's sort of like a date. Unfortunately, Tohru has other things on his mind. First they visit a restaurant since they haven't finished breakfast. The second place? A restaurant. The third? Another restaurant. With each passing meal, Minko's happy fantasy of being on a date with the guy she likes turns into a living nightmare of eating. As she struggles with the amount of food now in her system, Tohru tells her to throw it all up and continue eating, intent on trying all the high-class food there is in Tokyo. Personally, I'm disgusted with his selfish behavior. Now, back on some random train, Ohana starts thinking about what Namiko said earlier. However, her thoughts are scattered when her phone starts ringing with the caller, ironically, being Kou. During their conversation, Ohana learns that Kou had attempted to visit her at Kissui Inn before, just like how she had just tried to visit him at the bookstore earlier. Just some unlucky timing for the too. Now wallowing in self-pity, Ohana explains to him about the plan to bring him and her mother to Kissui Inn but ends him telling him that he doesn't need to go since she feels really bad for always asking him for help. And with that, the two hang up. At that moment, I wanted to yell at Ohana for throwing away her chance to be with Kou. I believe that there's no need for her to feel guilty since he's helping her out of his own will; not asking for anything in return. Following the unfortunate phone call, the tears start flowing as she realizes that every time they talk over the phone, Kou always ends with a "See you" instead of a "See you later", implying that there may not be a "later". Will this be the last time that Ohana will talk to Kou? I hope not.

Back to Minko and Tohru, the two are now heading to the next item of the list: sushi. Although she prepared herself for another round of dreadful eating, she is spared as the two end up at a claw crane machine that held sushi plush toys. After winning many pieces of "sushi", Tohru finally misses one due to Minko's phone ringing. On the other end is Ohana who says she is giving up on the whole kidnapping now since she realized her selfishness. Despite aborting the plan, Tohru is still intent on meeting Ohana's mother because he wants to have a word with her about Kissui Inn. When the three finally reach Satsuki's work place, they are surprised to see her walking outside, with a suitcase in hand. It turns out that she took Ohana's "I'm taking you back with me" seriously and is taking an early holiday just to visit Kissui Inn. On the way to the inn, Satsuki causes many problems by making it seem like Tohru likes older women like her and proclaiming that Kou is Ohana's boyfriend without having proof. When they spot for a break, Tohru and Satsuki sit down for a talk. During their conversation, Satsuki looks back at her childhood and realizes that she was almost exactly like Ohana - telling her mother off for caring too much about work. The connections between the previous generation and the current generation are extremely similar. With the break now over, the group continue to make their way back to Kissui Inn. While half-asleep, Ohana concludes that, even though she returns to Tokyo someday, things will never be the same, specifically between Kou and her. And with that, the episode ends on a bittersweet note. The next episode should include a comedy-filled mother and daughter reunion. Looking forward to it.
