Hanasaku Iroha - Episode 13

Ouch!
Episode Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ (4/5)

All right, we got some family bonding time with daughter, mother and grandmother. The interactions between Ohana's mother and the landlady were less "intense" than I expected but that one night of drinking and talking, along with the multiple flashbacks throughout the episode, allowed viewers to understand them more. Ohana getting drunk and revealing all her feelings was the highlight of the episode (it just edged out the multiple slaps that Enishi received). With Ohana's mother confirming that she enjoyed her stay at Kissui Inn and Ohana yelling her farewell to Kou, the drama takes a backseat as the obligatory beach episode is up next! Yuina finally gets screentime.

With Satsuki's arrival at Kissui Inn drawing closer as the minutes go by, the staff prepare to serve this "special" guest. When the time finally came, Satsuki's first comment was about how worn out the inn looked. Then, upon seeing her mother and brother at the entrance of the inn, she starts casually speaking to them, throwing in a few jokes and insults along the way. When Nako shows Satsuki to her room, the rest of the staff outside know that this is just the beginning. Back in one of the guest rooms, Satsuki starts criticizing Kissui Inn; first the boring yukatas and then the plain tea snack that is served with the tea. On the other hand, she tells Nako that talking about yuzu, which the area is famous for, is a good way to start a conversation with a customer. To end off the scene, we have Satsuki commenting on Nako's beautiful eyes; a little something those yuri fans. Meanwhile, outside the room, Enishi is pacing back and forth, telling Tomoe that he is worried about what his older sister would do to Nako. His horrific childhood with his sister, from having to do her summer break homework to having his New Year's money stolen by her, is shown to be the cause of his paranoia. When Nako finally exits the room, she shocks the two outside by commenting on how wonderful her talk with Satsuki was, saying that she learned a lot on how to serve customers better. As she continues to talk, Enishi attempts to copy down what she says. However, the landlady comes up from behind and slaps her son for doing that before walking away, without another word. As for Ohana, while cleaning the entrance of the inn, her mother, from the window of her room, tells her that she would like to go somewhere together. That place turns out to be the shrine area that Ohana had been to a few times. When at the top of the stairs, Satsuki starts talking to Ohana about her problems with Kou, guessing that he dumped her. Fed up with how Satsuki is trying to act like a motherly figure now by being concerned about her problems, Ohana leaves. On her way back to the inn, Ohana actually believed what her mother said and is obviously depressed about the fact that "Kou dumped her". Even the gray heron failed to scare her. Upon entering the staff room after returning, Ohana sees that everyone is gathered. Ren and Jiroumaru-san then begin to tell their tales of "failure" in which Satsuki was involved, agreeing that she isn't an easy customer. However, the staff believe that Satsuki being here is much better than Takako's presence. At that moment, Enishi appears, overjoyed at the mention of Takako's name. With this being the last straw, the landlady stands up, slaps Enishi once and proceeds to repeatedly slap him over and over again until her rage was quelled. She then yells at him for trying to rely on other people in a time where the problem is dealing with family and not the inn, before walking out of the room.

After having calmed down a bit, the landlady gets a visit from Ohana. The two talk for a while before the landlady tells her that the two of them are the ones that now "this" customer the best, implying that they are the ones who are capable of serving her well, despite the fact that emotions may get in the way. And with that, the two start working, with the landlady cooking some food while Ohana prepares the futon. Both these special services really made Satsuki remember the past, both in her childhood and with Ohana. Later that night, Ohana and the landlady talk for quite a while about Satsuki's needs, with the length of the conversation surprising Ohana. All of a sudden, the phone rings and on the other side is, coincidentally, Satsuki, who requests tons of alcohol before inviting Ohana and the landlady to come to her room. When they get there, Satsuki is obviously drunk already and she eventually gets the other two to join her. With only juice to drink, I really don't understand how Ohana could get drunk. Anyways, in that state, Ohana spills the beans about her love for Kou without realizing it. We also learn that the landlady confessed to Ohana's grandfather five times before they finally got together. Before passing out, Ohana declares that she chooses life at Kissui Inn over life with Kou, meaning that we may never see Kou again. Too bad. At the end of a long night, with the alcohol and juice taking it's toll on the landlady and Ohana, respectively, Enishi is forced to carry his mother back to her room while Satsuki watches; just like old times.

The next day, Satsuki takes her leave before handing a letter over to Ohana. After her departure,  Ohana opens the letter and reads it to everyone. The first part of it contains life advice with the second part praising Kissui Inn for the staff and service. After hearing this, the staff members are shocked but happy at the same time for they proved that Kissui Inn is an excellent place. Later in the day, Ohana heads up to the shrine alone and, while she's there, she realizes that, even though she misses Kou, she can't head back to Tokyo, not because things won't be the same between them, but because her life exists here at Kissui Inn. Because of this, Ohana screams at the top of her lungs, apologizing to him for everything she has done, thanking for everything he has done and, finally, saying her goodbye. And with that, the tears flow, possibly marking the end of Kou's presence in her life. I don't really know what to say about her decision. I understand how she feels and hopefully things turn out right. As for the next episode, it seems that the drama will be taking a break as the obligatory beach episode arrives. Looking forward to it.
