Accel World - Episode 19

It's like Power Rangers all over again...

Aside from the lack of main story development, this was not too bad of a conclusion to a mini side story. The fight itself between Kuroyukihime/Crikin and Sulfur Pot wasn't terribly entertaining to be honest as the outcome in the end was all but obvious right from the start. Megumi showing up partway had me interested in seeing how her relationship with Kuroyukihime would change after her identity as a Burst Linker was revealed... until the "memory wipe" card was pulled, changing her back into yet another obsolete side character. I guess the only positive, plot-relevant event that occurred was Kuroyukihime receiving the "Mystical Reins" item. I have a feeling it's going to come in handy sometime in the future.

Looking at the overused elements that were thrown into this episode, the two most prominent ones were Crikin's transformation/gattai sequence and Megumi coming down from the sky as a magical girl to save the day. Both these events are from different anime genres (i.e. mecha and mahou shoujo) so seeing them together was quite amusing. Then there's the fight itself—an overpowered enemy proves to be a lot of trouble for the protagonist(s), to the point where defeat is almost inevitable, yet there's somehow a miraculous twist that ends up turning the tables, allowing good to prevail over evil—where have we not seen that before? In a sense, I think I could have just skipped fight shortly after it started and I still wouldn't have missed any important points aside from Kuroyukihime obtaining the reins.

Now that it's back to the main story (in which, judging by the preview, even Kuroyukihime's return doesn't make a big difference), hopefully things get interesting once again. Although some viewers might have been annoyed with the side story, there might also be others who believe the two-episode sidetracking contributed to a higher level of suspense. Regardless, both sides now anxiously await Chiyu's explanation, as well as Nōmi's inevitable defeat.
