ZETMAN - Episode 9

Things are getting interesting indeed.

Similar to how waves continually crash against the shores of land on a stormy day, the overflowing emotions of many of the characters were put on display in this episode. From them, we learn of each person's ideals and motivations; their thoughts as well. Some end up clashing with one another, while others slowly merge to become one. Episodes like these show that entertainment does not always have to come from 24-minutes of high-throttle action, even in shōnen anime. I personally found this episode to be one of the better ones thus far as the absence of a long fight scene or two freed up time for the story to develop.

With Seiji's devious plan now in motion, he has successfully caused the protagonists' side to be in a state of panic. Sustaining the most damage is the Amagi Corporation, with many of its members facing difficult times now. For Kōga, someone who desires justice, seeing his family's company slowly falling apart has strengthened the flames of frustration inside him. His parents' priorities are shown to be conflicting with each other; his mother prioritizing her children, while his father chooses the company over his kids. Konoha's in a total mess now, having been traumatized by the recent events and realizing that everyone is keeping secrets from her, not knowing that it's for her own good. Additionally, the chairman almost gets killed while his dear friend Dr. Sugita does. Overall, a bad day for the Amagi Corporation, all at the hands of Seiji and Jirō. To top it all off, I think it can be confirmed that Hayami's up to no good after he shows his evil smile while Kōga isn't looking.

The final dagger for Jin x Konoha fans might have just been thrown in this episode as the shocking (and rushed) kiss between Jin and Hanako is proof of this. I personally felt it came out of nowhere, given that Jin had previously shown no emotion towards Hanako except for possibly a small bit of concern due to her situation. And now you expect me to believe that he's suddenly in love with her? Come on, at least make it a bit more realistic and just leave it as a hug for now. I also hate how Hanako acts like the victim of her parents here; from what I could tell, her parents seem like decent people and that it's actually she who's distancing herself from them. I'm usually fine with anime pairings because the two characters involved generally match each other. It's unfortunate that this is not the case here.

And as if it couldn't get any worse for Kōga, it seems like Jirō will administer another "test" in the next episode. Judging by the preview, Kōga will once again "fail" as he chooses Konoha over the other choice, possibly causing him to question his ideals. On a less serious note, I guess there'll be a party in the next episode. Interesting...
