Sankarea - Episode 9
As much as I dislike fillers, I found this Mero-focused episode to be quite interesting and entertaining. Even as a side character, Mero has gathered her own group of fans, with some claiming that she's the "perfect imōto". While normally emotionless, this episode showed a new and cuter side of her. In addition, bits of her past during which she spent with her mother were shown, hinting that Mero really misses her mother, despite keeping a strong exterior when the issue arises in front of her friends. What's interesting is the uncanny resemblance between Rea and Mero's mother. As if showing their similarities once wasn't enough, there were multiple scenes which implied that Rea is somehow related to the Furuya children's mother. Whether this is all just a part of Mero's imagination or not is still a mystery.
Unfortunately for those who were hoping for just a one-episode break, the next one also seems to be a filler. This time, however, it features Rea's mother. While I am interested in finding out why she has that cold and rude personality of hers, I would actually prefer it if the story picked up from where Episode 8 left off—right after Chihiro gets kidnapped by Danichirō's men. Hopefully, the preview is just highlighting a part of the episode and not the whole thing. I mean, with two fillers in a row, there's no doubt that many fans will get annoyed. Nonetheless, there should be a decent amount of Rea in the next episode (since it does seem like it'll touch on her relationship with her mother) so maybe it won't be a total lost cause, after all.
