AKB0048 - Episode 3

おめでとう,少女たち!

Wow... I actually thought this was going to turn into another Madoka at one point. The intensity of the selection round, enhanced by the music, made watching the episode a great experience. What's more is that the lyrics of "Beginner" actually fit in with its accompanying scene perfectly; it was as if all the candidates were singing the song from their hearts. Before the revelation that the whole thing was a simulation, I genuinely felt shocked when I saw many of the girls get eliminated by the enemy craft, thinking that they were dead. Even though what Chieri said was right—how some will pass and some will fail—I couldn't help but feel sorry for those who failed as all their hard work and effort amounted to nothing.

Now that the selection round is over, the main cast of seven move on to become understudies. With such a colourful cast of characters, I'm expecting great things from them in the future. Furthermore, I have a feeling there's still going to be more characters, given that the red-haired, micsaber-wielding girl in the OP has yet to show up. Judging by her appearance, she'll be the tomboy of the group—another unique addition.

Despite being only three episodes in, I think I can safely say that I'll be looking forward to watching AKB0048 every week. Although the general consensus for these kinds of shows is that they're "moeblobs with no plot", this is definitely not the case, believe it or not. The story is progressing at a good pace now, while the moe aspects are successfully kept. Couple this with epic songs and animation and you get AKB0048. I'm willing to bet the budget for this show is insanely high, assuming each and every episode after this is more or less the same.

Oh, and I think I'm slowly becoming a fan of AKB48's songs.
