Ano Natsu de Matteru - Episode 10

Random screenshot of Rinon is random.

Now that Kaito and Ichika have each other, the focus shifts to the three heartbroken friends. Although each of them puts on a mask of composure, their true feelings cannot be hidden. Deep down inside, Kanna, Mio and Tetsurō are all obviously hurting, but each does not want the other two to know. The common issue of wanting to help their love interest, but at the cost of their happiness has emotionally crippled the three; it is seen most in Kanna who, although she tried to convince herself that she had made the right choice, cried through the night, troubled by what may have been regret.

Lying to oneself about feelings is a common escape route for those who know they are holding onto a one-sided love. It is only until this episode in which Tetsurō chooses to stray from this path. Similar to how Kanna had made Ichika realize her true feelings, Mio helped Tetsurō to be honest with his (i.e. the fact that he likes Kanna). Although this meant she was putting herself in the same position as Kanna, I really liked how she didn't break down emotionally, even though she knew that her chances had all but disappeared, as it shows she has changed a lot from the time when she first confessed. Tetsurō's confession afterwards showed a truly different side of him; one that he had never shown before. Normally calm and relaxed, Tetsurō's sudden outpour of emotion took me by surprise. Unfortunately, Kanna's love for Kaito proved to be genuine, resulting in Tetsurō being rejected. The final step in untangling the relationship web was Kanna's direct confession to Kaito (i.e. not Tetsurō doing so for her, without her permission). For some reason, the seemingly forced smile on her face after Kaito revealed his feelings for Ichika pierced my heart slightly. I just find it depressing that she'll be subject to seeing her crush with someone else because of the need to film the movie while having to put on a smile that tells everyone "Don't worry about me. I'm fine!" On the other hand, seeing Mio return the favor by supporting Tetsurō in his time of need was really heartwarming and touching to see; makes me glad I'm still a Tetsurō x Mio supporter.

With all the relationship problems seemingly solved, a new issue arises. It doesn't seem like a "happily ever after" ending for Kaito and Ichika will come that easily. Now that Ichika's sister has also come to Earth, presumably to bring her younger sister back to their planet, things will get complicated. I'm assuming that Ichika will end up leaving in the end, fulfilling the "matteru" part of the title. The flashback-style storytelling leads me to further believe this guess. While many would prefer a happy ending, I find a dramatic (and maybe depressing) ending would have more impact. Though no matter the ending, I can almost surely say I've enjoyed Ano Natsu de Matteru.
