The Mysterious Couple |
Mixed feelings about this episode. On one hand, Rin was really moe in this episode, especially during her conversations with Daikichi. However, on the other hand, Rin's mother really annoyed me. She isn't annoying like Reina, but annoying because of how useless and selfish she is. What made me decide this was when her boyfriend (the guy who is shown to be living in her home) showed up, meaning that she not only abandoned Rin for her job but also for her own personal desires. But with the boyfriend in the picture, the story of Rin being an illegitimate child is now questionable since she must have gotten her blond hair from one or both of her parents. With her mother having black hair, one would think that the orange-haired boyfriend is most likely the father. When the one question is answered, many more come up. Guess I, along with the rest of the viewers who haven't read the manga, will have to wait and see how this guy fits in to the story.
In times of distress, who does a child turn to for comfort? In Rin's case, it isn't Daikichi. Instead, it's her stuffed rabbit. I find it sad how the rabbit is essentially more important than Daikichi in Rin's eyes. Anyways, during breakfast on the morning after Daikichi's humiliation, Rin decides that she would like to get herself a kitchen knife! Fortunately, Daikichi shows that he is a capable parent by not succumbing to the begging of his child. Later, the two head out towards his parents' house. Along the way, Daikichi thinks back to his conversation with Masako-san, allowing the viewers to be filled in on the details of that interesting conversation. During the phone call, her stupidity and clumsiness are shown through the way she speaks. But in the end, they must have decided on a place to meet. So, after dropping Rin off at his parents' house, he goes out to meet Masako-san, something that all viewers definitely looked forward to since it most likely means all questions will be answered. It turns out the meeting place is at a family restaurant near his grandfather's place, something that surprises Daikichi since he thought Masako-san wanted nothing to do with the Kawachi family after the old man's death. After entering, it appears to him that he is first to arrive so he gets a table, orders a drink and begins to wait. Shortly after, his phone rings and the caller is, unsurprisingly, Masako-san. But when he picks up the phone, the echoing of her voice causes him to turn to the table behind him to see where it was coming from. And what do you know, Masako-san is right there! Now, the long-awaited conversation begins...
I will not go through their conversation in detail but my reaction of wanting to go into the screen just to yell at Masako-san pretty much sums it all up. First of all, she seems to be clueless about everything that's happening right now, up to the point of not reacting to seeing Rin's photo. Next, she admits that, because of her job as a manga artist, she abandoned Rin. In my opinion, she could've just settled for a job that would be able to support herself and Rin. But no, she selfishly took the job as a manga artist. Even though she said that tried her best to care for and support Rin, I think that she, deep down inside, didn't want to and only did it because Daikichi's grandfather was still alive. To top things off, she doesn't even know if Rin is important to her or not since she doesn't consider herself as a mother. Just when I thought the conversation was over, Masako-san brings up the suggestion of having Rin change her family name to Kawachi instead of Kaga. But because Daikichi isn't selfish like her, he tells her that he will ask Rin and give her answer later. When Daikichi finally arrives back at his parents' house, Rin is fast asleep. And so, his mother is given the opportunity to rage, an opportunity she definitely didn't want to let slip past her. Ironically enough, she, without knowing that it's Masako-san's idea, agrees that Rin should change her family name to match Daikichi's. On top of this, the reasons to support her claim are similar to Masako-san's. At this, Daikichi declares that he will adopt Rin, causing a big argument to ensue between him and his mother. His determination to care for Rin is commendable. For the remainder of the day, Rin and Daikichi do what a regular daughter and father would do: cook, bathe, eat and brush their teeth together. At the end of this, Daikichi decides to ask Rin about the all-important decision about him adopting her. After beating around the bush for a while, he finally manages to ask her but receives a firm refusal, in return, something that didn't seem to faze him. But when Rin tells him that he should just stay the way he is, it caused tears to flow from his eyes, which he claimed was sweat. In the end, he reminds her that this is going to be her home from now on, meaning that he has no intention of giving her up to someone else in the family.
The next day, just so happened to be Rin's graduation from nursery. After some singing and dancing, the students each receive a certificate, causing me to think how bad my high school graduation was considering it was similar to the nursery graduation depicted here. That night, I believe Daikichi calls Masako-san who ends the call by saying she understood what she was just told. But then the real shock comes in the form of an orange-haired young male who seemed to be living in the same place as her. The possibility of him being Rin's father, instead of Daikichi's grandfather, isn't out of the question since his hair color is not black. But what's even more mysterious is how he will fit in to the story. Luckily, my mood was lightened thanks to the heartwarming scene of Rin and Daikichi embracing each other after the ED. Hopefully, more about the orange-haired guy is revealed in the next episode. Looking forward to it.
