Ikoku Meiro no Croisée - Episode 8

Claude x Camille

Episode Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ (4/5)

So we get some, but not enough, in my opinion, on the backstory of Claude and Camille. Although, judging by Camille's words, I think that she feels so restricted in life due to her high-class life. Her innocence as a child allowed her to laugh the days away with Claude but, after growing older and learning the ways of an aristocrat, the joys of life all seemed far away. Deep down, I believe that both Claude and Camille still have feelings for each other but are unable to express them due to the current circumstances. I really hope that they are soon able to be true to themselves and express to each other what they really want. It would make such a happy ending. But because Yune is supposedly the main character in this show, I don't see what I want happening anytime soon. Luckily, I may get my full serving of Claude x Camille in the next episode. Anyhow, I'm liking where things are going right now.

With Yune now fully recovered from her cold, Claude decides to do the right thing and go thank the Blanche family in person, along with Yune. But as he gets ready, he thinks back to when he used to go there all the time as a kid to play with Camille. At one point, she even confesses her love for him, although, as a child, that doesn't really mean anything significant. It is not known what happened between the two to cause their bond to break but I'm guessing it has something to do with the difference in social status and wealth. When Yune is ready to leave, she spots a cat at the front of the store and lets it in. But when Claude sees it, a face of displeasure appears on his face. Oscar then explains that Claude isn't fond of "cats", which I think is a metaphor for "woman", because all the ones that he loved ran away (broke up with him). Despite the fact that Yune has no clue about the whole thing, Claude snaps at his grandfather for revealing such embarrassing information. Meanwhile, at the Blanche mansion, Alice and Camille are also preparing for the day's events. Through the sisters' conversation, it is evident that they both want to be like the other, without realizing the difficulties that are also present. But their conversation ends abruptly when Edgar the Butler informs them of the arrival of Yune and Claude. After hearing this, Alice quickly rushes downstairs to greet Yune and takes her away to a garden area where their tea party is to be held. As for Claude, he starts to observe the two from a nearby window until one of the maids draws his attention to Camille, who was standing nearby, holding a white cat that used to be her mother's. A flashback shows that this cat has been here since the two were kids but it was restricted to one room. The two then go into one of the many rooms in the mansion to talk. But instead of a friendly conversation, barely any words were exchanged and there was obvious tension in the air. But upon looking at Yune and Alice through the window, it is obvious that it felt nostalgic for the two. However, things only went downhill from there and, soon after, Camille exits the room, leaving Claude to think about the fact that he is unintentionally using Yune for his own benefits.

Although the adults are not having such a great time, the children certainly are. Alice starts off the tea party by asking Yune to tell her some Japanese stories. Unfortunately, lack of knowledge on Japanese culture causes Alice to bombard Yune with questions. Oh, and let's not forget about Oscar back at the Enseignes du Roy. Unsurprisingly, he slacks off, instead of watching over the store, and starts drinking some wine with Alan from Episode 5. Back at the mansion, Yune finishes telling a story which amazes Alice. In return, she offers to tell Yune a story of her own and the two go back into the mansion. The two then go to a room which used to belong to Alice and Camille when they were younger. Through a flashback, Alice is seen telling a story about a girl from the east with black hair going to overseas and meeting a girl from the west with blond hair, obviously a connection to the present. The story ends with the two girls, now friends, exploring the world on a dragon. After the story, Alice rushes out of the room when an idea popped into her head, leaving Yune alone in the room. Shortly after, Camille shows up and initiates a seemingly unfriendly conversation with Yune, using her maturity to take advantage of Yune's innocence. But after allowing Yune to choose and try on one of the dresses in the wardrobe, she started to treat her with kindness for reasons I don't know. Seeing all that made me want to get to know Camille more; her mysterious personality interests me. As Camille helps Yune into the dress, she gives her some sisterly advice and talks more about her past with Alice. At the end, Camille decides to give the dress to Yune since Alice had said that the dress is for the foreign girl in the story. Oh, the coincidences! And as a new ED plays. Camille opens the window, looks out into the sky and, for the first time that I've seen, smiles. Next episode looks to be awesome with even more Claude x Camille. Looking forward to it.
