Ikoku Meiro no Croisée - Episode 5
Episode Rating: ★ ★ ☆ ☆ ☆ (2/5)
I'm surprised. This was a boring episode to be honest. Too much depressed Yune for my liking and little to none moe scenes. It was really difficult to watch Yune suffer during her time alone with the Parisians. The romantic scenes between Yune and Claude were nice, though. I, for one, hope that the relationship between them don't end up being anything more than just friends; the age gap is just too big in my opinion. But after this mediocre episode, the preview for the next one gave me something to look forward to. Alice and Yune together should be provide an overload in moe.
Considering the fact that I found this episode boring, don't expect too much in terms of review detail. Anyway, we start off with Yune bothering Claude while he's working by staring at him. Her desire to work instead of having freedom surprises Claude, once again highlighting the differences between Japanese and French lifestyle. So, in order to give her something to do, Claude tells her to polish the lamps that are on display in the store. While she cleans, Yune spots a lady doing some window shopping outside the Enseignes du Roy. Thinking that it would be good to talk to her, Yune starts ranting on about what the store offers. This, in turn, scares away the lady, a potential customer. Depressed, Yune walks back into the store where Claude explains to her that Parisians will get suspicious of strangers who talk to them with a huge smile on their face, something that is supposedly the opposite of what happens in Japan. He then warns her to watch out for any suspicious strangers who act too friendly. However, it seems like Yune didn't listen to him as she starts waving to the small, blonde boy (seen in a few of the previous episodes) looking through the window of the store, scaring him away. Continuing from where he left off, Claude continues his lecture about being cautious around strangers, using that boy as an example of someone who, because of their homelessness, needs to steal just to live. After hearing this Yune can't believe how everything in France is the exact opposite of everything in Japan.
Later in the day, as Yune continues to clean the lamps, Oscar comes out from the back of the store, informing her that he has decided to go on a trip, something that Claude didn't seem too happy about. Shortly after, the blond, homeless boy returns and, this time, enters the store. As Yune goes to see what he would like, the boy points to one of the candelabrum. As her attention shifts to what he's pointing at, the boy quickly snatches the item and runs off with it, leaving Yune motionless with shock. When her body finally starts to move, the boy had already created a huge gap of distance between them. The commotion causes Claude to momentarily stop his work and check out the situation. But when he goes to the front of the store, all he sees is a fallen candlestick at the entrance. Yune ends up being unable to catch up to the boy, causing her to feel extremely bad. To make things even worse, the other Parisians seem to be ignoring her when she tries to talk to them. Even a little girl didn't want to talk to her. When she realizes that talking to other won't work, she decides to go back to the Enseignes du Roy in order to tell Claude about what happened. Unfortunately, she notices that she is lost. She then starts to wander around the Galerie. On the other hand, Claude frantically asks his fellow Parisians about Yune's whereabouts, but comes up empty-handed. The lowest point of the day for Yune must have come right when a random juggler starts drawing a crowd around her, causing her to realize that, even though there are so many people, she can't even talk to one of them. But when she walks away from the crowd, Claude's glasses-wearing friend from another store finds Yune and tries to bring her back to his store (That's the most logical place, in my opinion). But, upon remembering what Claude said about strangers who are overly friendly, Yune breaks free from his grasp and runs away, leaving the guy to wonder what he did wrong. She then continues to run and run, with her hope of finding Claude or the Enseignes du Roy dwindling with each step. However, a hand reaches out to her suddenly, pulling her towards its owner. And when she looks up at who this person is, she sees the Claude's familiar face, causing her to be relieved of all her worries. To her surprise, when she tells him about the unfortunate incident, Claude is not angry at all, but, instead, he tells her that she is more valuable to him than any of the items. As for the boy, he manages to sell the candelabrum for a few small coins, enough for the day's food expenses.
On their way back to the Enseignes du Roy, Claude and Yune meet up with the glasses-wearing guy, who introduces himself as Alan. Now knowing that Alan isn't a suspicious person, Yune feels really bad for what she did before and tries to apologize. But instead of being angry about it, Alan kindly offered his hand for her to shake, showing that he would like to be her friend. Later that evening, Oscar returns and replaces the old wick for the kerosene lamp that Yune was cleaning earlier. After lighting it, he explains that the lamp's light is a symbol for Yune and how she came into their dull, boring house, giving them light. He then gives her one of the roses from the bouquet that is going to be for his date tonight, telling her to take good care of Claude. He then exits the room, leaving Claude and Yune to enjoy their dinner together. A dinner of good conversation and laughs ends with the soothing image of the candle and the rose together. After the ED, I'm sure that many viewers who hated the boy for stealing the lamp will be able to sympathize with him as he is shown sitting by himself in a dark place and sharing the loaf of bread that he bought with the small amount of money he got for the candelabrum with a stray cat. This showed that he wasn't thinking of only himself when he stole from the store. As for the next episode preview, it looks promising. Looks like it's going to be good moe material so I'm looking forward to it.
