Usagi Drop - Episode 4

Rin, why so serious?
Episode Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ (4/5)

Sigh, a cliffhanger? Just when I thought we would finally get to learn about Rin's mother, Masako Yoshii, the episode ends. This is why I really dislike cliffhangers. Anyways, like always, Rin was extremely moe in this episode. Everything from interacting with the adults at Daikichi's farewell party to mingling with the other children at the nursery is nosebleed-inducing material. But with Rin's mother now in the picture, one may wonder whether this is the end of the happy days for Rin. Hopefully, it's not and that her mother will positive affect Rin. Next episode should be good.

It is inevitable that Rin's relationship with Daikichi would soon be questioned by her peers at school. The problem is that Rin is unable to answer this question since she still isn't sure who Daikichi is to her. This inability to answer brings unfortunate insults as the other children start calling her weird. Fortunately, another boy steps up to defend Rin after the other kids tease her about not knowing who her father is. This boy, Kouki, is in a similar situation as Rin, although not as bad, since his father ran away from him and his mother. Throughout the day, the two new friends begin to talk with each other, with the significant part of their conversation being about Kouki teaching Rin about the word "divorce", making her wonder if that's the reason why her mother is gone. At the end of the day, after Daikichi picks Rin up, the two coincidentally run into Kouki's mother. An interesting development, if I do say so myself. On the way home, the two adults have what looked to be a slightly awkward conversation, ending with Daikichi revealing that he isn't Rin's father. After the two part ways, Daikichi can't help but continue thinking about Kouki's mother. But his thoughts are interrupted when Rin talks about divorce, contemplating the possibility of her mother being absent from her life because of it. She then tells Daikichi that she isn't sure about whether she wants to meet her mom or not. However, if her mother turns out to be like Kouki's mother, Rin, along with Daikichi, both agree that they definitely want to. I think that Daikichi shouldn't have let those lustful thoughts turn into words in front of such an innocent child.

Sometime later, Daikichi surprises his mother by calling to tell her that Rin's mother is actually his grandfather's maid. Unfortunately, the conversation is cut short as Daikichi enters the bullet train to work and the time skips to when he arrives at work. There, his former subordinate hands him a paper that has the details on the farewell party for him. The case of Rin being the number one priority in his life causes Daikichi to decline the invitation. Later in the day, Gotou-san comes up to him and persuades him to go by telling him that she'll bring her child if he brings Rin. Even Daikichi notices that she is just using that as an excuse to go drinking but he doesn't have time to refuse as she quickly skips away. That night, Daikichi gets a phone call from his mother who confirms that his grandfather had hired a maid by the name of Yoshii Masako. His mother then starts to rage but Daikichi tells her to calm down, saying that there's still a lot of unknowns, despite the fact that this Masako-san is most likely the one whose name is on Rin's health record. I don't know if it's the same day or not but Daikichi and Rin then arrive at the farewell party. When they first get there, Rin, along with Gotou-san's son, look extremely nervous, but when they see each other, their faces light up. Midway through the party, Daikichi gets up to go to the bathroom. However, when he reaches the door, he hears people talking about him inside. After hearing those negative things, he walks away, realizing that the old him would've gone ballistic by now. He then continues to reflect on how much he has changed ever since he took in Rin. With the party now over, a slightly drunk Daikichi heads home with Rin and finds some mail regarding Rin's education in there. The next day, Daikichi, along with Kouki's mother are late in picking up their child to go to some parent-child assembly at a local school. As they make their way to another part of the school, Daikichi and Kouki's mother have a less awkward chat and, in the end, Daikichi is happy to hear that she praised him by saying that he and Rin look like a real family. When he and Rin arrive at home after a long day, Daikichi first has some unimportant conversation with Haruko about Rin's schooling supplies. Later that night, while Rin is asleep, Daikichi takes the opportunity to fill out the health form required by the school using Rin's health record. While flipping through the small book, he sees a web address written at the bottom of a page. When he accesses it using his laptop, he is shocked to see his grandfather's will on the website. It turns out that the website, which is actually a blog, redirects the reader to look in Rin's health record again. After taking a while to thoroughly search through the book, Daikichi finds a hidden sheet of paper in it. Through the words written on the paper, Daikichi's grandfather assures the reader that Masako didn't abandon Rin for no reason but only did so because she felt she was unable to become a mother due to being young and inexperienced. On top of this, Daikichi's grandfather states that really cared for Rin. On the flip side of the message, Daikichi sees the phone number for Masako-san, an extremely lucky find.

The next day, right when Daikichi was about to call Masako-san, Rin appears storms into the room and demands that he help tie her hair up so they look like bunny ears. Apparently, Reina, being the jealous and annoying brat that she is, said Rin wasn't cute. I think that everyone agrees with Daikichi when thinks that Rin is obviously much more cute than Reina. Nonetheless, he decides to help Rin after she whines a bit. After a long struggle with Rin's hair, Daikichi finally finishes and the result isn't half bad considering that it still looks better than Reina's hairstyle. Suddenly, Rin bursts out into singing and dancing but soon realizes that she has to keep the talent a show a secret from her parents, something she isn't doing too well at. While Rin practices in another room, Daikichi starts to wonder what caused Masako-san to abandon her own daughter. Later that night, after a long day of shopping for school supplies with Rin, Daikichi finds time to finally do what he wanted to for a long time now: find out why Rin's mother did what she did. And when he calls her, the episode ends with her answering the phone. Quite a detestable cliffhanger if you ask me. Even the funny scene after the ED where Rin wants to buy lipstick so that it will make her look older didn't make up for how much I hate the cliffhanger. I'm guessing the next episode will include more drama than usual. Really looking forward to it.
