Kami-sama no Memo-chou - Episode 3

No homo. Just a ritual to initiate Narumi into The Fourth's group
Episode Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ (4/5)

Narumi really showed how much of a man he is in this episode; from joining The Fourth's group to still being able to stand after getting beat. Though a bit confusing, I'm glad the case is finally solved. The last scene with Meo and her father was very heartwarming; makes me feel glad that I can see my parents everyday. No hints about the next case from the episode preview but maybe since Min fanservice?

Not surprisingly the three guys who behind the ramen shop appeared at the end of the last episode are up to no good. After one of them creates a mess in the shop, they each rudely ask Min-san to bring Meo to them, knowing that she's here because a phone call was made to her father's cell using one of the shop's phones. However, their antics don't have any effect on Min-san who firmly stands her ground and denies knowing about Meo's whereabouts. When it was obvious that they weren't getting anywhere with this, the leader of the three, who randomly shows up, commands his subordinates to retreat. With the problematic group now gone, Min-san, along with Narumi, clean up the mess that was left behind. While cleaning, Narumi voices out his guilt that came with making Meo cry by claiming that her father had abandoned her despite lacking evidence of that being true. In an attempt to cheer him up, Min-san gives him the honor of trying a new ice cream that is going to be on the menu for the summer season. While he eats, she explains that Hanamaru had been passed on to her by her father who had suddenly disappeared one day. Despite this, she still cares for him and would like nothing more than to see him. She ties her story in with Meo's situation as well, saying that, if Meo and her father truly care about each other, then nothing that anyone says can pull them apart.

The next morning, Narumi rushes over to Hanamaru after receiving an urgent call from Min-san. Upon arriving at the ramen shop, he is filled with disgust when he sees slanderous graffiti sprayed on one side of the building. Shortly after cleaning the graffiti, he goes to Meo's room to wake her up. Unfortunately, all that is in there is a farewell note, explaining that she is going to look for her father by herself. When he tells Alice this, she puts the blame on herself before giving him information about the man behind all this: Mikawa from Hello Corporation. After tracking Meo down via the public telephone she is currently using, Narumi heads after her, despite Alice telling him to wait for backup since it's too dangerous to go alone. When he finds her sitting on the steps in front of a convenience store, he persuades her to not give the money to the Yakuza since it is obvious that they won't release her father. Instead, he takes the bag of money from her and runs away from the Yakuza right when they arrive, pulling Meo along. Unfortunately, the two are sandwiched in an alley when another Yakuza car blocks the exit. When the two refuse to let the Yakuza have their way, the group of men are left with no choice but to use physical force, punching Narumi multiple times before dragging Meo into their car. Luckily, The Fourth and his men show up just in time and take out most of the Yakuza by surprise.

When Narumi finally wakes up after a long rest, Meo, who's real name is Charunee (but I'll still call her Meo), promises to never run away without saying anything again, knowing that she caused a lot of trouble for everyone. Then, The Fourth shows up, informing the two that the others are here to pick them up. But before Narumi leaves, tells The Fourth that he wants to make a pledge of brotherhood him, saying that he won't be able to forgive himself for hurting Meo if he doesn't do so. To be honest, I don't understand how this pledge can help him protect Meo or become someone she can trust. Nonetheless, The Fourth's not refusing meant that he was fine with it. After hearing this, the group of well-built idiots start congratulating Narumi. To end things off, The Fourth sets the sake ritual for tomorrow and tells the idiots to help with preparations. The ritual turned to be nothing special; the two involved only help each other drink some sake (which looked like water). To wrap up the ritual, Alice, along with the others, clap once in unison. Once outside the ritual room, Narumi hands Meo the cell phone that Alice had found inside the money bag. After being told that it's her mother's phone and seeing the picture of their family as the wallpaper, tears start flowing out of her eyes. And now, the confusing part of the episode begins: Narumi's plan to save Meo's father.

After getting permission from Meo to take the 200 million yen, Narumi and the others discuss about the origin of the money. Then, the plan, which isn't even explained is executed. It included the idiots using bank ATMs, Hiro handing envelopes to girls, Hitoshi rigging some wires, Meo, Narumi and Ayaka splitting the 200 million yen into smaller portions that went into envelopes and Tetsu bringing back bank statements. Once all preparations are complete, Narumi heads out with the money bag. Along with The Fourth and Tetsu, the three end up at Hello Corporation's office building. Once inside Mikawa's office, Narumi drops the bag on the table, seemingly accepting the fact that they would have to give up the money in order to save Meo's father. But when one of Mikawa's bodyguards (that's what I'll call them) opens the bag and sees bank statements instead of money, Narumi begins his bluffing. He tells them that, after cracking the bank's systems, the money is deposited in Meo's father's bank account and will then be transferred to the Kishiwada Group's bank account on Monday. I think that Mikawa, who is runs Hello Corporation as a front company for the Kishiwada Group, doesn't want the transactions to be shown on the account since the money is illegal. For more on front companies, click here. Whether or not I understood that correctly or not, this means that Mikawa will have to bring Meo's father to the bank on Monday to cancel the transferring since the bank currently cannot be reached by phone (phone line rigging done by Hitoshi). So, when Monday finally arrives, everyone stands by, awaiting the arrival of Mikawa. And when Mikawa and his group show up, the fistfight begins. With everyone else seemed to be caught up in the fight, Narumi takes the opportunity to rescue Meo's father. Bad idea. He gets owned by some of Mikawa's men. Fortunately, Meo shows up, with the short distraction allowing Meo's father to escape from the Yakuza's clutches. Before the battle finishes, Narumi gets accidentally punched in the face by Tetsu. As he lies on the ground, the sight of father and daughter reuniting is enough to make all the pain go away. He passes out soon after. In a short scene after everything is solved, Meo dresses up before going out on a "date" with her father. Creepy but also quite sweet at the same time. I'll take it as a date without any incestuous intents. No hints about the content of the next episode so it's still a mystery. Looking forward to it.
