The faces of insanity and rage |
For the first half of the episode, I wasn't even sure if I was watching the right show...
The episode picks up from where Episode 2 left off from Nako and Minko's point of view. The two of them are now walking towards the staff room, unsure if they are going to be able to eat what Ohana has made for them. Once they enter the staff room, Ohana is nowhere to be seen. Minko then rages due to the fact that she didn't make breakfast today because she thought Ohana would. But before her anger got worse, Nako finds a pot full of taro and a large pile of spinach near the stove. The two realize that Ohana had been here but is somewhere else right now. The camera then shows the path to the Wave Room where Ohana was. Also in the Wave Room was the perverted author who was responsible for Ohana's disappearance. Thinking that no one would distract him because he had told the staff that his room didn't need further cleaning, he attempts to tie Ohana up tortoise bondage style. Even while reading a manual, he fails. To make matters worse, Ohana instructed him how to tie her up. Being taught bondage by the one who's being tied up is very lame. After humiliating him and causing him to reveal that he is not a famous author, Ohana tries to comfort him. After a while of whining, he decides to let her read an erotic novel he wrote. This is where I wasn't sure if I was watching Hanasaku Iroha or not. While Ohana is it, a visual representation of the words is shown. If someone was to just watch this scene by itself, they would definitely think this was some kind of yuri/ecchi anime.
After a while of reading, someone knocks on the door of the room. While Ohana hides, Mr. Perverted Author (Jiroumaru-san), goes to see who it is. The person at the door turns out to be Nako who tells him that she was here to clean and check the lights. After getting annoyed by her, he rudely tells her to go away. Ohana, who couldn't bear his rude words any longer, gets out of her hiding spot and shows herself. Scared that Nako would tell the other staff about his kidnapping of Ohana, he decides to tie her up as well. Unfortunately, the short old man was standing behind Nako the whole time. Being left with no other choice, he decides to tie the old man up too, which, surprisingly, seemed to please the old masochist. After threatening to tie the old man up, Tomoe happens to walk by. Jiroumaru-san then submits to defeat as the number of people to tie up was too great. He then chooses the only alternative: escape. He quickly dashes out of the room and falls down the stairs. Assuming he got away with it, the staff members start piling their complaints about him on Ohana's grandmother. However, she tells them that they should not doubt the customer. The "customers are always right" saying is really stupid in this situation because it is obvious that Jiroumaru-san is not 'right'. After hearing that the police may be called, he steals the inn's truck and drives off. A while later, the staff are hot on his tail with an automobile of their own. After a while of high-speed chasing, they finally catch up to Jiroumaru-san who is standing at the edge of a tall cliff. As the staff try to convince him not to jump, he starts crying about his own failures. At the end, he does jump off the cliff but fails to die. As he is pleading for help in the water, Nako quickly dives off the cliff to rescue him. Here it is revealed that Nako had been swimming since she was three.
After saving the worthless Jiroumaru-san, he is forced to become a staff member until he can repay his debts. The group then settles down near the water and eat together. Before eating, Ohana compliments Nako on her swimming ability. Nako, who seems to be on friendlier terms with Ohana now, offers to teach Ohana how to swim because she failed at teaching Ohana how to be a waitress. Back where everyone was gathered, Ohana grabs the ladle out of Minko's hand just as she was about to serve herself. Ohana then purposely fills Minko's bowl full of spinach. Minko then eats the spinach which seemed to fill Ohana with joy. Minko must have been really pissed off at that moment because she randomly blurted out "Hobiron". Back at the inn at night, Ohana discovers that hobiron meant "duck egg with a partially developed embryo inside" which was disgusting. Now I'm tempted to start calling people hobiron when they piss me off. Just before the episode ends, Ohana gets a text from her friend Kou-chan who apologizes to her for not seeing her off the day she left and wishes her good luck. This week's Hanasaku Iroha was less drama; more comedy as opposed to the last two episodes which were more drama; less comedy. Next week appears to be the first episode where the girls go to school and the introduction of a new character. Looking forward to it.
