Hanasaku Iroha - Episode 2

Ketchup message reads: I hate you Mommy!
Episode Rating: ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆ (3/5)

As a child Ohana had been taught a single important rule by her mother: Don't rely on other people. Believe only in yourself.

After two days of exhausting manual labor, Ohana still has the energy to get up at five in the morning to cut the grass outside the inn. Even though she is up early and working hard, her grandmother is still unappreciative of her efforts - ridiculing her for not cutting the grass short enough. It was most likely an understatement when Ohana said she was not too fond of her grandmother. Later in the day, Nako (the girl who restrained Minko from scaring Ohana in Episode 1) was assigned the task of training Ohana to become a waitress (a waitress is like the cleaning lady of a hotel apparently). Ohana's attempts at starting a friendly conversation were futile because of Nako's shy behavior. After cleaning out the first room with ease, Ohana goes on by herself to clean the second room. Sometime earlier, Tomoe had told Ohana about that the person residing in the room was a famous author. By the looks of the room, this person was the messy type. After some through cleaning, Ohana looking forward to cleaning the next room. Unfortunately for her, that was the last room that needed to be cleaned. I found it funny that Ohana actually enjoy cleaning messy rooms. She's the working type I guess.

While taking the bags of trash from the room, Ohana overhears Minko getting yelled at by Tohru again. After hearing that the staff's breakfast is not going to be made, Ohana takes the initiative and cooks the meal herself. After Ohana was praised by all the staff (except her grandma) for her work, Minko rage quit in jealousy and stormed out of the staff room saying she had to do inventory. It was obvious that Ohana meant no harm but Minko thought Ohana had made the meal to piss her off. After a hostile conversation outside the staff room, Ohana is left with Minko's famous words ringing in her ears - "die". Just as Ohana started to feel bad for herself, she hears a strangely familiar voice. Curious about it, she enters the place where the voice was and eventually ends up being blamed for the disappearance of a draft that the supposed "famous author" was writing. After the short conversation between Ohana, her grandmother and the "famous author", I realize that the guy is nothing but a cheap waste of space who probably fabricated the story of losing the draft just to make his stay at the inn free of charge. What a despicable person. Technically, the person to blame for this is Nako because she was supposed to tell Ohana that the room was not supposed to be cleaned without the customer's permission. However, Ohana didn't want to cause more trouble and took the blame, surprising Nako.

A short while after the whole fiasco, Ohana takes a ride with Tohru and on the way, she uses Minko's catchphrase after he made her angry. After thinking about the meaning of what she just said, she apologizes and makes her way back to the inn on foot. Along the way, she is confused about what she really wants to do at this place. Her conclusion? She wants to be able to rely on others. Back at the inn, she gets into a heated argument with Minko and eventually Nako is dragged into their problems. The result is Ohana telling them both that she will change by becoming more considerate and being willing to rely on others. After getting the two of them to reveal their least favorite foods to her, Ohana cooks breakfast with those foods the next day. I don't know if that was supposed to make her feel better or something but I found it quite weird. After making the meal, Ohana was about to throw the trash away until Tomoe told her that she was putting it in the wrong place. Realizing that the trash from the room she cleaned yesterday could still be there, Ohana decides to see if the draft was in one of those bags. To her surprise, she finds the draft to be an erotic story about a girl named Ohana (coincidence?). At that moment, the cheap-waste-of-space-failure-as-an-author walks menacingly towards Ohana. Now I'll have to wait a few more days before I get to see what happens. Sigh. Cliffhangers suck.
