Shin Sekai Yori - Episode 13

Copycat!

Okay, so Mamoru didn't die... yet. Instead of quietly disappearing like the others before him, he's now dragged the other three into his problem. Then again, you can't have an interesting story without some good 'ol drama and suspense. As the group further strays from the path that upstanding citizens of the community walk on, things are undoubtedly going to get tougher for them—whether it be persecution at the hands of the Ethics Committee or mental strain from the stress of the situation. Given Mamoru's recent experiences, I think it's safe to say that his time is almost up. As the "weakest link in the chain", getting rid of him will most likely make the remaining three stronger, although none of them would like to admit that. The preview further increases the chance of Mamoru's end arriving soon as he can be heard screaming "I don't want to die."

After Mamoru, I have a feeling it's going to be Maria who's next, albeit it likely won't occur until sometime afterwards. Of the three, Saki has plot armour and reassurance from Satoru's grandmother that she's the most mentally stable of the group, while Satoru himself has always appeared to be calm and collected during difficult situations. Then again, at one point early on in the series, "older" Saki (i.e. the narrator) mentioned Maria's birth resulted in something along the lines of thousands of people dying. And so, when Maria's turn to depart from this world comes, it might not be just a simple disappearance like the others before her. Now, I might be jumping to premature conclusions but these are just some of the thoughts that cropped up in my head while I was watching the episode, which I found to be somewhat weak when compared to a few others. Luckily, Shin Sekai Yori has consistently been a rollercoaster ride so the next episode should theoretically be good.
