Ano Natsu de Matteru - Episode 8

Ichika: No glasses > Glasses

After what transpired last episode, things were bound to get awkward between the parties involved. Nonetheless, the five try and continue living life like always, with their feelings more or less obvious now. Both Kaito and Mio have openly expressed their love for Ichika and Tetsurō respectively, with the two at the receiving end seemingly feeling the same. Although the progress the two pairs are making is very nice to see, I can't help but feel sorry for Kanna since she's the only one left heartbroken. Her hopes were all but crushed at the conclusion of this episode and I think she knew it. Now it seems like the only way she'll end up with Kaito is if Ichika has to leave, which is not out of the question since Ichika would've been taken back to her planet this episode if it weren't for Kaito.

I find the romance is handled really well in this series. It's complex to the point that it's entertaining and not too complex such that it's confusing or annoying. Having characters like Lemon for comic relief and as a catalyst for the development of the relationships allows each episode to be enjoyable and decently paced. I especially loved how Lemon drew a relationship chart of the others. While on the topic of Lemon, two more pieces of evidence showed up in this episode that further increases my suspicion of her identity as an alien. First of all, when she met up with Manami (the two appear to be well-acquainted), she claimed she was "forever 17". While this may be a reference to Tamura Yukari's (Lemon's seiyū) running gag of claiming that she's 17, it can also be seen as one of Lemon's supernatural abilities - anti-aging. Secondly, when the rescue pod (or whatever it was) came to Earth to take Ichika, Lemon didn't even bat an eye when she saw it. It seemed like she was expecting it/already accustomed to seeing those kinds of things. Although if she does turn out to be an alien, it'd explain many things. However, I personally hope that this isn't the case and that Lemon's just really "unique".

Next episode could end up being the climax of the series. Now that Kaito saw her powers, there's almost no way that Ichika can lie her way out of this. On top of this, the others were also in the vicinity and will probably find out about her identity too if she decides to tell Kaito. Whether this will mark the beginning of the end of her time on Earth is still a mystery. What I do know is that things will probably never go back to normal after this. It'll be interesting to see how this new development will affect the relationships of the characters. Next week should be good.
