Ben-To - Episode 12
Episode Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ (5/5)
My apologies for the late review. Bandwidth issues prevented me from downloading the episode when it was released.
Sometimes it's not the visible things that cause one's downfall; it's the invisible things that do. And in the spectacular finale of Ben-To, we learn about the "downfall" of the Sawagi Twins three years ago. The surprising revelation that this downfall of theirs was because they took some eel bento three years ago without having to fight really delivered the message that the mental pain they suffered that day is many times greater than the physical pain they inflict upon their victims. It is especially severe in the older Kyou's case as she is seen to grimace at the thoughts of that day.
With all the talk of pride and honor having been emphasized from the beginning, it's not surprising that this episode contained a lot of dialogue on these two attributes. Although Yō made the cliche "hero appears at the last minute to save the day" appearance, it is evident that, through the words that come out of his mouth, he has learned a lot about battles for bento throughout the past 12 episodes. He has gone from being an underdog to achieving the glory of a top Wolf, capping the night off with the best prize in his hands. It's truly amazing to see this transformation.
The only disappointment for me was the lack of Sen in this episode. Although it was more or less a happy ending for everyone, I felt the ending could've been better if Yō had managed to defeat his senpai in the most epic fight of the series to contrast with the start of his bento-battling career where his first defeat came at the hands of that very same senpai. Nonetheless, this ending was satisfying too as we get to see Yō and Sen enjoy the out-of-this-world taste of delicious unagi bento.
Overall, I really enjoyed the series and hope for a season two packed with more awesome bento battles. I think the chances of a second season are very possible considering that the Wizard and his relationship with Sen are still mysteries. Anyhow, I'm glad that I ended up watching this show as I feel that I would've missed something unique and entertaining if I hadn't.
Random Note: I want some unagi bento.
