Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko - Episode 12

It's been a while since Erio appeared with a new hairstyle <3
Episode Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ (4/5)

A decent episode? Yes. A good ending episode? No. They left things quite open-ended but I guess that's because there's going to be an Episode 13 coming out on BluRay/DVD. Although it wasn't necessarily boring, I just didn't feel entertained while watching this episode. Sure, there were some nice Erio moments but Makoto's deep philosophical soliloquies made me feel like I was in class (which isn't a good thing since I just finished school). Overall, a satisfactory end to a series that made me less and less interested as the episodes went by.

The opening scene shows a silhouette of Makoto picking up a baseball from the river while Erio observes while sitting at the riverside, sparkling. Moe! After OP, it skips to another point in time where Makoto is talking with Maekawa-san over the phone about tomorrow's baseball game that decides whether the city or shopping district is hosting the summer festival while Erio is stargazing. In the middle of their conversation, Makoto confirms with Erio about her participation in tomorrow's game. Before hanging up, Maekawa-san tells Makoto that she will have a "surprise" for everyone tomorrow. The way she said that must mean it's going to be something hilarious. While Erio is recording what she saw in her notebook, Makoto starts going into one of his soliloquies again - this time about what Yashiro told him the other about him having the potential to get close to his esper powers. I can't believe he actually took that girl seriously. The next day, after some extremely funny and weird morning exercises, Makoto and Erio head off to the baseball game. There, they see Ryuuko, who is apparently there to cheer for Makoto, and the tension between Erio and her is evident. However, this tension is momentarily broken when Ryuuko embarrasses herself after saying that she will "always be by Makoto's side". Shortly after, Maekawa-san shows up in what looked like a beluga costume, informing them that her father, the pitcher of the team, has run away due to the pressure of winning this game.

After knowing this, the team discusses their current situation. During their discussion, Meme appears out of nowhere, dressed in baseball attire and wielding a metal bat. It turns out that Meme is the "surprise" that Maekawa-san had told Makoto about. After being informed about the lack of a pitcher, Meme, who doesn't know a thing about baseball, demands to know why they need a water server for baseball while spinning around in circle. *facepalm*. When she finally stops, she announces that Erio will be the pitcher. Causing the whole team, including Erio, to shout in surprise. And with that the two team line up and the match begins. When the catcher goes up to Erio and asks what she can throw (meaning what kind of pitches), Erio replies with a list of random objects like pizza and books. After hearing this, the catcher runs back to home plate with tears in his eyes, showing that he knows that they are going to lose for sure. Back on the bench, Makoto complains about Meme benching him. However, she explains that her reason for that is because she wants him to find Maekawa-san's father and bring him back to the game. When he refuses to go, Meme threatens to tell everyone about the time in Episode 3 where he started rubbing his face into the pillow that she used. Not wanting his secret to be revealed, Makoto reluctantly goes off to find Maekawa-san's father. Right as he is about to depart, Erio throws a really weird pitch that fools the opposing batter, resulting in a strike.

While he rides his bicycle around town, Makoto begins another soliloquy about his failures at soccer. After he finally chases down Maekawa-san's father, the two fall down in the middle of the road due to fatigue. Although he was determined not to go back at first, Makoto's long-winded explanation convinced Maekawa-san's father to return to the game. Unfortunately, the ride back became extremely awkward as a grown man is sitting behind a teenage boy while holding onto him. That scene just screams "pedophile!". When the two return, the shopping district team is down by two put have runners on first and second with one out. With this situation, Meme decides that Makoto will pinch hit for the team. Right before he goes to the batter's box, Ryuuko comes over and screams "GANBARE NIWA-KUN!" right beside him, causing him to cover his ear in pain. She then hands him a helmet and watches him head towards the batter's box with a confidence. As he faces Hanazawa, his exaggerates everything from her pitch to his swing. In the end, he hits the ball to deep right which looked to be an easy out for the right fielder. However, after he glances at Yashiro for a moment, a strung gust of wind starts blowing and the ball sails out of the field and into the river that was shown in the opening scene. A home run. After he returns to the bench, he gets a disgusting kiss on the cheek from Meme which freaks him out. Meanwhile, Yashiro is shown to be smiling and walking away from the game. The episode ends with a mysterious and open-ended scene of the river at sunset, with a baseball sitting on the rocks at the bottom of it. With this, a season two is very possible though I don't know what they can talk about since there doesn't seem to be anything that can further the plot. Anyways, a mediocre ending episode to a decent series.
