Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko - Episode 3

Captivating
Episode Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ (5/5)

Wow, it's not common for anime characters to find a solution to the main problem so quickly. I'm glad that Erio looked like she snapped out of her "I am an alien" state but I wonder how they are going to use the next nine episodes effectively. I'm loving this series so far because of the wonderful variety of characters. Erio is in contention to be one of my favorite characters this season.

This episode starts off on a nice sunny day. All is quiet in Makoto's room. However, he seems to be bothered by something despite the peaceful surroundings. Ah, yes. Erio is sitting beside him, still wrapped in her futon. Even if he tries to move away from her, she follows him. This made Makoto unable to concentrate on his reading so, in an attempt to focus better, he decides to listen to music on his iPod. Unfortunately for him, Erio takes one of the earbuds an puts it in her futon. To put an end to her childish actions, Makoto starts playing his music and, fittingly enough, the OP starts. I found this short scene with no dialog transitioned to the OP well.

During lunch at school, Ryuuko asks Makoto what his hobbies are. Since he didn't have any particular hobby, he told her he likes deep sea creatures. I personally find that weird because most deep sea creatures are really ugly. During class, Makoto reflects on his high school life. At school, he finds that it is going smoothly and he is enjoying it. However, the life at home is kind of like a black cloud hanging over his head. Every three days, he takes Erio to the beach where she was found after her disappearance. Because he never lost his memories, he knows he doesn't understand how Erio is feeling. On one of the days they met Maekawa-san on the way home, Makoto asked her about her opinion on aliens. In response, she compares believing in aliens to religion. Some people believe because they will benefit from it. One weekend, Makoto and Ryuuko decide to hang out together. During their stop at a diner, Makoto asks Ryuuko what the word "mystery" means to her. After a while of thinking, she tells him that so many things in the world are mysteries to her. She also believes that maybe she is alive because all these "mysteries" came together. On the way home, Makoto sees Erio walking. He offers her a ride on the bicycle but she refuses. It seemed like she was mad at him for something.

At night, Meme comes in the room and starts flirting with Makoto. An aunt flirting with her nephew is one thing I would have never imagined. Even when he asked her the serious question of how Erio was born, she keeps on joking and flirting. She's such an airheaded adult that it's really funny. Shortly after, Meme decides to play Old Maid with Makoto. To make it more fun, they make a bet. If Makoto wins, he gets anything he wants. However, he loses 13 times in a row and Meme implies that she cheated. Nonetheless, his losses give her what she wanted: a talk. After he sits down beside her, she suddenly hugs him and her attitude changed from hyper to serious. She repeatedly tells him to give up on Erio if the only reason he is involved with her is because she is pretty. At the end of her rant, she tells him that she wants to sleep together. Having had enough of her weird behavior, he kicks her out of his room. After confirming that she was gone, he goes back into his room and starts rubbing his face on the pillow that Meme rested her head on. That definitely creeped me out. Unfortunately, she was hiding in Erio's room and came back when Makoto started making sounds. Being caught doing that embarrassed him beyond belief. Even the thought of suicide crossed his mind.

The next day at school, Makoto kept thinking about Erio and her past. When he gets back home, he goes straight to Erio's home and tells her that he will fly with her. However, if she can't fly, she is not an alien. With a determined look on her face, Erio agrees to this. As they make their way toward the place where Erio last attempted to fly, Makoto explains his plan. While riding downhill towards the guardrail, he would concentrate on Erio's facial expression. If he can see even one glimpse of fear, he quickly decelerate and change course. Satisfied with the plan, he starts pedaling downhill towards the guardrail. However, once the bicycle starts speeding up, he discovers that the brakes are not working and he is unable to stop. Once they crash into the guardrail, the impact sends them flying. It was amusing when Makoto shouted "I CAN'T" (in English) and the two of them shouted "FLY" at the same time. While Makoto believed that they couldn't fly, Erio thought they could. For a moment, the two of them thought they were really flying. That was until gravity started doing it's job. The two of them along with the bicycle then plummet into the ocean. After surfacing, Makoto is all smiles because he just proved Erio wasn't an alien. Erio, however, was shocked with this realization. After rubbing the truth in her a face a bit more, Erio started acting more like a normal human being. Her voice started showing emotion and her words were easier to understand. Amidst tears, Erio reintroduces herself to Makoto and their friendship begins. Now all there is to do is hope Erio is actually out of her "I am an alien" state and that SHAFT is not trolling with this episode. Really looking forward to the next episode and the rest of the series.
