Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko - Episode 11

It's surprising how ugly the graphics for Japanese games are
Episode Rating: ★ ★ ★  ☆ (3/5)

Seriously, the only reason I am still watching this show is for Erio to show up. Although there are some deep meanings associated with many of the conversations the characters hold, I don't like the fact that this anime is feeling like a lecture to me. This episode was a bit amusing, especially with Makoto's unwatchable and embarrassing speech, but it was mostly boring. Lack of Erio was disappointing. Nonetheless, will continues to finish this series since it only has one episode left. My rating for the show is starting to drop, unfortunately.

Oh great, we start off with another boring lecture by Professor Makoto. This time, he talks about his lack of skills which did not earn him playing time when he was on the soccer team at school in grade five. He then quit a year later since he realized his own failure and that he was satisfied with watching his friends from the sidelines. And ever since that time, Makoto felt that he started to take less risks. Back to the present, where it is summer time, and Makoto lazes around for most of the day while everyone else is out doing something else. However, the feeling of hunger eliminated his desire to stay in the house. While on his way to get something to eat, Makoto bumps into Maekawa-san who suggests that he go to her house for to eat instead. With Maekawa-san in the basket at the front of his bicycle, it must have been hard for Makoto to see what was in front of him. After the two reach their destination, Makoto settles down in the living room while Maekawa-san is elsewhere in the house. Suddenly, she comes back with a doughnut in her hand and bites into it. After realizing that Makoto didn't get what she was doing (well neither did I), she walks away again, commenting on how boring he is. As boredom starts to set in, Makoto decides to take a look at the garden in the backyard. While he is observing the luscious plants that are being grown, an all too familiar person wearing an astronaut helmet suddenly appears, crawling towards the tomato plant. After stopping Yashiro the thief, Makoto tells her to wait before walking back into the house after hearing her stomach growl from hunger. Once he reaches the kitchen, he asks Maekawa-san for a couple tomatoes which he gives to Yashiro after. After devouring them, the self-proclaimed esper quickly leaves.

With lunch now ready, Makoto sits down and prepares to eat his free meal. After eating the meal which, to him, was delicious, the two make their way to Maekawa-san's room to play video games. The console they played on looked like a rip-off of an SNES while the game looked like a Mario Kart rip-off. On top of that, the graphics are extremely ugly and just looking at them makes me wonder why they can't look any better. During the gaming, in which Makoto seemed to really get into, they talk about giving. At first, Makoto giving up when it comes to hitting Hanazawa's pitches in baseball is the main focus but it slowly shifts to Maekawa-san talking about how she can't deny that she is about 180cm tall. Soon, Maekawa-san implies that she hasn't given up on getting Makoto to like her yet (at least that's what I think she means). However, Makoto, being the dense guy that he is, thought she was talking about the racing game. *facepalm*. At the end of the day, Maekawa-san's words make it obvious that she likes Makoto but he still doesn't get that.

That night, while he is on the phone with Ryuuko talking about her basketball game tomorrow, Erio comes into his room, asking him to go see the stars with her before climbing onto to his bed and asking him if he's on the phone. Then, after smelling the phone (yea, I don't know how that helps), she guesses correctly about Ryuuko being on the other side and starts making a moe & annoyed face. On the other end, Ryuuko attempts to speak English but fails really badly. In the end, Makoto accidentally says that he will "go out with Erio after he's done talking" which Ryuuko obviously misunderstood. He meant that he will go out and see the stars with Erio but Ryuuko thought of it as a date. Fortunately, this craziness ends after Ryuuko's phone runs out of batteries. After Makoto mentions to Erio about Ryuuko's game tomorrow, she refuses to go and wraps herself in his blanket before falling off the edge of the bed, saying that she doesn't like school (and Ryuuko maybe?). However, when Makoto suggests that they watch the stars now, she energetically agrees, crashing into the door as she rolls towards it.

The next day, when Makoto sets foot into the school gym, Ryuuko approaches him with a big smile on her face. Shortly after, a fellow basketball club member, Mikki, comes over to the two of them and starts teasing Ryuuko about her love for Makoto. While the two girls converse, Mr. Dense just stands there. After they run off, he looks around for a place to sit and easily spots Yashiro who stood out because of her weird attire. He then walks over with a creepy grin on his face and rips off her helmet, looking satisfied after doing that. Shortly after, Nakajima and Hanazawa show up and it turns out that they are dating. Meanwhile, the game has just started. During the first half, Ryuuko is at the sidelines but when the second half starts, Ryuuko gets her chance to shine in front of her love interest. Unfortunately, she epic fails immediately, causing Nakajima to facepalm. Luckily, she ends up getting a free throw because of some off-screen foul. As she prepares to shoot, Makoto, after getting some encouragement from Yashiro, stands up and gives the most embarrassing speech ever. After screaming about his own failures and saying ganbare many times, he sits down, satisfied with his own little rant. Hanazawa's "Owarai Onna to Otokogi Otoko" (literally Laughing Girl and Manly Boy) was a nice play on the title of the series. The dramatic music during this whole scene was a nice touch. And with that, Ryuuko sinks both free throws. As for this week's adolescence points calculations, Makoto has all positives and is up to a +19. Next week's episode title is a reference to 5 Centimeters per Second but I doubt it will have anything related to it the movie itself.
