Hidan no Aria - Episode 7

I gotta admit that Shirayuki wasn't half bad this episode
Episode Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ (5/5)

Things are starting to heat up as Durandal makes his appearance. Even though the whole episode is easily predictable, the execution of the plot is excellent. However, because this series is 12 episodes, only two to three arcs will be able to fit which is disappointing considering the fact that I am just starting to really like this anime. Nonetheless, I will continue to anticipate the next installment of Hidan no Aria and hopefully the good episodes will keep on coming.

After yesterday's fall into the cold, dark waters of the ocean, Kinji is forced to stay bed the next day because of the cold he caught. As he is sleeping, Aria quietly walks in, dropping a new bottle of the cold medicine that Shirayuki broke in the last episode beside him. At sunset, when Kinji finally gets enough energy to move, he is bombarded with questions of concern by Shirayuki. After managing to calm her down, he thanks her for the cold medicine, thinking that she was the one who bought it. Even though she knew that she didn't buy it, Shirayuki didn't tell him that. The next day at school, Kinji decides to chill at the roof of the school to avoid all the scantily clad cheerleaders. Unfortunately for him, one of those cheerleaders happened to be Aria who easily found him. After approaching him, she proceeds to raise one of her legs and, after Kinji failed to catch it, slams it straight down on his head. Instead of sympathizing with him, she ridicules him for not being able to do an edge catch. She then tasks him with checking all of Shirayuki's texts after school, knowing that Durandal targets his victims by sending a threating text message first. She also tells him that Reki is replacing her part-time as Shirayuki's bodyguard. To an outsider, this may look like a bad decision because Reki's way of guarding involves pointing a sniper rifle at an unsuspecting Shirayuki. As Kinji thinks about the possibility of Shirayuki getting owned by Reki, Aria violently pulls on his ear, angry at him for not listening. This causes Kinji to tell her how fed up he is with her uncaring attitude. On top of that, he scolds her for not being thoughtful like Shirayuki whom he thought bought her the cold medicine. Just like Shirayuki, Aria is unable to tell him the truth. With both parties getting more and more angry, voices start to get louder and louder. When Aria accuses Kinji of having no proof that he and Shirayuki were not doing indecent things to each other last night, he finally snaps. With the anger just pouring out of him, he demands her to show him proof of Durandal's existence. In the end, the fact that even her partner didn't believe her about Durandal caused her to cry. Nonetheless, Kinji continues to anger her by saying that he will guard Shirayuki by himself until Adseard is over so she can cool down. At the mention of him being alone with Shirayuki, Aria's sorrow turns into anger and she begins to shoot at Kinji with her pistols, repeatedly calling him a baka.

Inside the student council room, Kinji tells Shirayuki about the change bodyguard plans. On a side note, it's hard to believe that he escaped Aria's shooting spree unscathed. Anyhow, the news of Kinji being her only bodyguard delighted Shirayuki. On the other hand, Kinji has no idea why she would be happy with an E-Rank Butei guarding her. What a dense guy... That evening, while the two were walking home together, Kinji decides to take Shirayuki to the fireworks show that was happening this evening. Even though she is not allowed to leave the school grounds without permission because she of her status as a Miko of the Hotogi, the thought of Kinji going with her made Shirayuki forget all about the restrictions. Before heading to the show, Shirayuki takes the opportunity to buy a kimono which rendered Kinji speechless when he saw her in it. While walking to the place of the fireworks, there is an awkward silence between them, mostly due to the fact that both of them have never talked much to people of the opposite sex before. Upon reaching the beach where the fireworks were supposed to be launched, Kinji realizes that he messed up the times and that the show already ended. Despite this, Shirayuki still gave him words of appreciation which caught him off guard. Wanting to make it up to her, he goes off to a nearby fireworks stand to go get some sparklers. A short while after he left to buy the sparklers, Shirayuki gets a text message. After reading it, her face shows obvious signs of distress so it's safe to say that the one who sent the text is Durandal. When Kinji returns with the sparklers, he notices that Shirayuki looked troubled. However, when he asks her about it, she told him that everything was all right. After the sparkler burns out, Shirayuki tells Kinji that she predicted his future the other day with something called "Miko cards". The results apparently said that he would disappear. Shirayuki interpreted this as Aria taking Kinji away from her, hence his "disappearance" from her life. After hearing that, Kinji just laughs, saying that it would never happen. However, Shirayuki tells him she noticed that he has been happier even since he met Aria. All of a sudden, she jumps towards him and, through tears, asks him to, even if its just this one time, to have eyes only for her. She then delivers the knockout blow by asking him to kiss her. Her tears and pleading voice made Kinji pity her and, as he goes in for the kiss...some random kids start launching fireworks, ruining the moment. Before this happens, I thought it was going to be Aria who interrupts them but that would have caused way too much drama. With the mood that was built up now shattered, Shirayuki decides that it's time to head back.

The next day, at Adseard, Shirayuki and Kinji both attend to duties as student council president and bodyguard, respectively. After a while, Kinji is told by Shiranui to take over for Mutou at the reception desk. Thinking that Shirayuki wouldn't be at risk because of the large amount of people present, Kinji tells her that he will be at the receptionist desk. Right after he leaves, I had a feeling that things will start spiraling downhill from here. A short while after, Kinji receives a random text from Shirayuki. In the first line, she apologizes to him and, in the second line, she says goodbye. As he starts thinking about the meaning behind the message, Tsuzuri-sensei appears and grabs him by the collar of his shirt, demanding to know where Shirayuki is. The teacher then asks him if Shirayuki had received any texts lately, saying that he is most likely involved if she did. At the mention of he, Kinji remembers what Aria had said to him earlier about Durandal's way of targeting his victims. Realizing that Shirayuki may be in danger, he starts running. While he is randomly running, he tries calling Shirayuki and Aria but both girls don't pick up. After another period of running, he ends up at an open area with nothing around him. Shortly after, he receives a phone call from Reki, who shoots a bullet from her gun right between his two feet after hearing the distress in his voice. After the shot, she tells him to calm down because being calm will allow him to fully use his abilities. Once he is calm, Reki gives him some information about the possible whereabouts of Shirayuki and he immediately rushes there. When he finally reaches the suspected area, he finds that the place is filled with crates full of explosives, which renders firearms useless. After searching around the room for a bit, he sees Shirayuki talking to someone who is hiding in the shadows (most likely Durandal). It turns out that Shirayuki and Durandal had previous made an agreement: he would not hurt anyone at Tokyo Butei High School, especially Kinji, if she meets him here. After revealing that the phone call in the last episode is part of his plan to get rid of Aria, he beckons Shirayuki to follow him to the EU. Right before she follows him, Kinji comes out form his hiding place and charges at Durandal with a knife in his hand. Unfortunately, he forgets the fact that he is dealing with Durandal, an unknown but dangerous enemy. Before Shirayuki could tell him to run away, a dagger comes flying of the shadows and causes Kinji to fall. As he tries to get back up, he is shocked to see his hand covered in ice that came from the dagger Durandal threw. With the element of magic added, this could turn out to be one tough battle. After preventing Shirayuki from helping Kinji out, Durandal attempts to finish Kinji off by throwing sword directly at the immobilized Butei. Luckily for Kinji, Aria comes just in time to knock the sword away. She then emphatically states that she will be arresting Durandal for the attempted kidnapping of a minor. It is quite obvious that he will temporarily elude them in the next episode but how that happens is still a mystery. After a successful Riko arc, Shirayuki's is turning out better than I expected. Really looking forward to the next episode.
