Pugs are awesome, just saying |
Well, that diary sure was disappointing. However, Menma's mother made up for it as she is proving that she will be a vital part of the next episode or two. I totally did not expect for her to be significant to the plot in any way but I guess this kind of plot twist is what keeps viewers interested. I, for one, can say that I am very curious to know how Menma's mother will be involved in all this. Her reason for not allowing Menma's friends to do something for Menma is still a mystery. At the end, her face and voice could have easily caused many viewers to label her as yandere. As the story unfolds, will Menma's mother be on the good or bad side?
It seems that Jinta is back in the secret base after getting kicked out by Anaru last episode. As he sits there, Anaru rants about the conversation she had with her angry mother. In the end, her mother didn't seem to care about her running away from home so that is why she ends up back at the secret base. After hearing her story, Jinta warns her about the consequences of not going to school by using his own life as an example. After realizing that he is probably right, Anaru compliments him, saying that he is always caring about others. That compliment caused Jinta to think back to what happened between him and Menma a few hours ago, resulting in him saying how Menma is more caring than him. When the topic of Menma came up, Anaru obviously didn't like how Jinta always thought about Menma so she tells him that he should stop brooding over Menma's death. However, Jinta responds by saying that he can't forget Menma because she is living in his house. Even though she doesn't say it directly, Anaru implies that she didn't believe him about Menma. This causes Jinta to get up and leave, fed up with her lack of trust. As he walks towards the exit, Anaru tries to stop him but trips over her suitcase in the process, causing her to fall towards him, making the two end up in an awkward position. At that moment, Poppo returns from buying some curry beef and, because he misunderstood the situation, runs off with the food so he wouldn't disturb the two.
Soon after, the misunderstanding gets cleared up and Poppo returns. As the three gather, they prepare to open the pages of the diary that may hold the answer to what Menma's wish is. After Jinta opens it and starts reading a few pages, the three are extremely disappointed at the contents. Both of the two pages that they read were exactly the same except for one word. The sentence structure looks, unsurprisingly, like that of a child. The next few pages were a bit different but there was still nothing of significance. A short flashback shows the Super Peace Busters visiting Jinta's mother in the hospital and the start of their fascination with fireworks and rockets. After remembering that, Jinta flips to the page that was used for the day when they decided to build a rocket-type firework that they would send to God with a letter requesting the healing of Jinta's mom attached. While the other two are excited about possibly finding out about Menma's wish, Jinta couldn't help but think about his mom. Menawhile, back at Jinta's place, Menma is busy playing Nokemon while negatively describing Jinta. Once Jinta got back home and started cooking some ramen for her, Menma's slight hatred dimished.
The next day, the Super Peace Busters gather at the secret base once again. This time, Yukiatsu isn't trolling but is, instead, ruining the plan of building a rocket-type firework by showing everyone the law that prevents people under eighteen from handling firework powder. After this disappointing development, Anaru remembers that she found something while cleaning the secret base the other day. It was guide, written by all of them back when they were kids, on how to build a rocket-type firework. One look at it now and they all knew it won't work. While returning home from the secret base, Yukiatsu comments on how building a rocket-type firework would be impossible. The possibility of it not being Menma's wish made him even less keen to do it because it would be a waste of time. After thinking over it a bit more, he decides to ask Jinta if he had confirmed the plan with Menma yet, obviously taunting him. Jinta, with his head hung low, tells Yukiatsu that he's afraid of confirming it with her and walks away. After Jinta left, Yukiatsu and Tsuruko talk about "that day" again. It turns out that the events of "that day" were to be kept a secret from Jinta. Back at home, Jinta is delighted to find out that his father knows someone who is able to make fireworks. After seeing his son finally wanting to do something with friends, Jinta's father can't help but support his son by asking the guy he knows about the possibility of making fireworks. After finding out the price of making fireworks to be 200,000 yen, Jinta was just about ready to give up. However, Poppo decides that it won't be a problem as long as he and Anaru get a job. Seeing that his friends are so willing to help him, Jinta decides to work too. The job that Jinta ends up getting is at the video game store that Anaru works at. After teaching him the basic operations of the cash register, Anaru realizes that it only took him a few minutes to learn it while she took a month. However, when a customer came in, her communication skills made up for her slow learning. Unfortunately, a couple of boys from their school come in shortly after and start gossiping about Anaru, loud enough so she could hear. Right when she was about to break down from the insults, Jinta scares them away with an extremely loud and awkward "irasshaimase!" Meanwhile, a short scene with Yukiatsu and Tsuruko talking to each other over the phone further emphasizes their academic success; with them placing 2nd and 4th in their year, respectively.
Over the course of the next few days, Menma finds that Jinta has been acting quite weird. Her suspicions are proved to be correct when a lady comes to Jinta's house one morning and asks his father if Jinta has quit school because she saw him working. Being the unique person that he is, Jinta's father tells the lady that he lets Jinta handle himself because freedom is something that is very important in their household. As the two continue talking, Menma starts complaining about the freedom while running out of the house. When she reaches the secret base, she sees Anaru answer a call on her cell phone. As she listens, Menma hears that Jinta is working at a construction site at night. Anaru's mention of fireworks also trigger something in Menma's mind. As Menma continues to worry about Jinta, she decides to see what his work is like. During one task, Jinta struggled with moving the wheelbarrow full of rocks because his path was not lit by a light. To help him, Menma moved the light so that it lit up his path, causing everyone to wonder how the light had moved by itself. Seeing him work so hard made Menma realize how awesome Jinta was. Later that night, after an exhausting night of work, Menma made Jinta some steamed bread with raisins. Unlike last time, the result this time was so good that Jinta said that it was close to what his mom used to make. Then, even though she knew he wasn't going to school, she asks him about it. In response, he lies and tells her that school is very fun and that it makes him feel alive. Once a decent amount of money had been made, the three hardworkers plead for the fireworks maker to start making the fireworks if they gave him a deposit. Unfortunately for them, the guy tells them that he can't make them anymore because a festival supervisor got mad at him for helping high schoolers. Furious about this, Jinta demands to talk to the festival supervisor in person. However (prepare for the plot twist), the supervisor turns out to be from Menma's house. With this piece of information, it is obvious that Menma's mother had just ruined their plan to grant her daughter's wish. In the last scene, while burning incense for her daughter, Menma's mother calls the actions of Jinta and the others a "joke". With that being said, a lot of drama is bound to come out of this. In the end, whose side will Menma take? Will she choose her friends who are trying to help her grant her wish or her mother who is trying to prevent the granting of her wish? Really looking forward to the next episode.
