Hanasaku Iroha - Episode 6

What are you thinking about, Tohru?
Episode Rating: ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆ (3/5)

I'm surprised to see actual fanservice (not part of Jiroumaru-san's erotic novels) in Hanasaku Iroha.  Things start getting more complicated now with Tohru increasing his harem count to three or four (Minko, Yuina and now Ohana and/or Nako). I'm sure that with 20 episodes left, the dramatic parts won't come until episode 20 or so. Right now, I find that the episodes are mostly focusing on character development, with this one in particular focusing on Takako, the weird business consultant advisor for Kissui Inn. Personally, I hate her because she is too full of herself. She is also really ugly and it's funny how she thinks her extreme plans will work. Next episode seems to focus on Tomoe so more character development is on the way.

This episode begins with the Ohana's grandmother paying all the employees their monthly salary. Ohana, who had just got paid for her first time was, at first excited, but then shook off her expectations because she had just remembered that it was her mean grandmother that had just paid her. Inside the envelope containing the cash, Ohana finds 20,000 yen. Behind her, Nako sees it and, thinking that Ohana would be depressed about it, tries comforting her by explaining that the food and lodging fees resulted in a lower pay. However, Ohana was actually overjoyed with the money because, at home, she would only get 8,000 yen (her age x 500 yen) for cooking, cleaning and doing the laundry. Nako was obviously so shocked that Ohana got paid so little for doing so much that she was left speechless. Before school going to school, the two decide to clean the front driveway of the inn. While cleaning, the main focus of the episode, Takako, appears in her red car. After getting out of the car and greeting the "useless inn" and it's "useless employees" she starts lecturing Ohana and Nako about the need to welcome a guest and how it is one of the basics of customer service. Shortly after, Enishi comes outside and escorts that self-centered lady into the inn. After Takako leaves with Enishi, Ohana comments on how she would like to "clean that woman up too." I couldn't agree more.

Outside the landlady's room, Enishi tells her that Takako has come . However, she lies about being sick and refuses to let Takako enter. As an alternative, Enishi gathers every staff member in the staff room and introduces them to Takako. Fortunately for the kitchen staff, her plan today focuses on the inn's waitresses so they are permitted to leave the room. After they leave, Takako reveals her master plan to be...*drum roll*...a complete change of the waitress' clothes (to more erotic ones). After a few words (in both Engrish and Japanese) of encouragement, Takako manages to convince Ohana to accept the plan, much to the dismay of Tomoe and Nako. Tohru appears to have been looking at all of them during that time, which causes Minko to be suspicious after she sees him staring. After the girls get changed, the clothing change is put to the test when they sent to the lobby to greet a guest. When the guest arrives and sees Ohana and Nako, his jaw immediately drops in surprise. Distracted by their physical appearance, he ends up falling on Ohana. At that moment, the door opens and the guest's wife and daughter stand there, shocked. Seeing as the plan failed, Tomoe takes Ohana and Nako to the guest's room to apologize.

The next day, at school, Ohana talks to Yuina about the Takako's "plan". After asking for advice, Yuina tells her that raising the slit on the China dress would work. While that may work in bringing more perverted people to the inn, it will certainly repel the "purer-minded" people. After school, Ohana and Nako return at the moment where Takako storms away from Kissui Inn after Ohana's grandmother told her she was unwanted. For the first time, I actually agree with the old lady. Takako's departure seemed to have left Enishi in a state of depression. Later that evening, Tomoe tells Ohana about Enishi's relationship with Takako. It turns out that Enishi and Takako went to the same college together. Now it's not surprising why he is saddened by her departure. Tomoe also tells her that the inn hasn't been doing so well lately because there aren't many customers. After Nako and Tomoe leave for home, Ohana and Enishi have a conversation about what happened earlier. From the conversation, I learned that Ohana's mother is someone who would try to cheer people up with baseless encouragement. This wasn't really surprising when looking back at how useless she was when Ohana lived with her.

The next morning, Ohana decides to talk to her grandmother about the financial status of Kissui Inn. After telling her grandmother about Yuina's suggestion of raising the slit of a China dress to increase the number of customers she gets kicked out of the room. On top of that, her grandmother threatens to fire her if she says the word "bankrupt" one more time. While thinking about the future of the inn, Ohana is interrupted by Denroku, the short old man. He leads her to a secret place in the inn where she sees a whole collection of uniforms, made by her grandmother. Nako, who had been following them, also went into the attic-like room. After picking out some clothes, they try them on and show Ohana's grandmother. Soon after that, every other staff member sees the two and are fascinated by the new clothes. Even the guests seem to be liking the new clothes. Some of the older customers even remember the time when Ohana's grandmother had worn them. At the end of the day, Ohana returned the clothes to it's original place, implying that they change was just temporary. Ohana ends the episode with a short soliloquy accompanied with a new ED. Next up is the development of Tomoe's character. Looking forward to the next episode.
