Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko - Episode 5

Presenting Twintail Erio - only here for a limited time!
Episode Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ (4/5)

Erio with twintails = win. She looked extremely moe in this episode because of them. Erio trying to slowly become a part of society again is just wonderful. However, the star of the show (for most people) goes to Meme for her superb rants that don't make sense whatsoever in addition to wrapping herself in a futon. It probably felt like déjà vu for Makoto when that happened. Overall, a good episode that had my weekly dose of Erio.

June 6th. Makoto and Erio have just returned from some shopping and Erio's moe level just went OVER 9000 even when though the episode is just several seconds in. Even Makoto can't help but be amazed at his cousin's moe voice and face. Upon entering the house, Makoto sees a far too familiar scene: someone rolled up in a futon in front of the door. This time, however, he decides that ignoring it would be better. Unfortunately for Erio and him, the futon starts chasing them, most likely not wanting to get ignored. After crashing into a door, Meme, not surprisingly, emerges from the futon. After listening to Meme's insane rant about turning 40 (June 6th is her birthday), Erio presents her mother with a birthday present that she had just bought. After accepting the present (which was dango), Meme decides to celebrate Erio's birthday tomorrow since she didn't get a chance to celebrate her last one. While looking on as both mother and daughter were each other's company, Makoto realizes that the Touwa household is now a fun and lively place to be.

The next day at school during lunch, Makoto attempts to get Ryuuko to help him find the right present for Erio. After school, Maekawa-san, who just learned about his dilemma, chooses to help him and, in the end, Makoto ends up buying warabi mochi for Erio. Upon stepping outside the store after his purchase, Makoto sees a plastic bottle rocket in the air. Maybe it doesn't mean anything as of now but I have a feeling that it will be significant in the future given the fact that this anime has an alien/outer space theme. That night, upon returning home, Makoto is greeted with "double twintails". According to Meme, Erio's hairstyle was twintails back in elementary school. As for her, she just felt like arranging her hair into twintails just so she can feel younger. After the hyperactive Meme leaves to make dinner, Erio tells Makoto that she wants to talk with him. Before he goes up, the phone rings and Makoto has a short conversation with his parents before Meme takes over, obviously annoying Makoto's father on the other end. After Makoto enters Erio's room, he sees her wrapped in a futon again and questions her about it. Apparently, the futon is like a drug for her; she uses it when she needs to calm down and talk. Just like me, Makoto thought that she needed a better way of doing that. That is why he proceeds to unwrap the futon, much to displeasure of Erio. However, her sadness quickly turned into happiness when Makoto gave her the present. And now, the time for Erio's grand announcement has come. She first tells him that he will be the only one besides her to know this. After expecting something grand, I was, in a way, disappointed when she said that she was going to work. Although I am happy that she is putting an effort into getting back into society, the way she made it seem so important was a bit unnecessary. Nonetheless, I hope Erio would be able to succeed in her goal.

June 12. Five days after Erio had told Makoto her goal, the two head out to a hair salon owned by someone Meme knows so to get Erio's hair cut. Midway through the haircut, the hairstylist lady, mistakes Makoto as Erio's boyfriend which causes Erio to be extremely embarrassed, getting bits of hair in her eye. After Makoto frantically clears the misunderstanding up, he is hit with another misunderstanding. This time, it was of him staring at Meme pervertedly. It was obvious that Makoto was fighting the urge to start raging in front of the hairstylist. The next few destinations after the hair salon were places where Erio would be interviewed by potential employees. Before the reaching their first interview place, Makoto makes the suggestion of going back to school instead of working. However, Erio believed that she isn't allowed to go back because she quit. Unfortunately, Erio got turned down by several employers because they recognized her as the "girl who always wraps herself in a futon claiming to be an alien". In an attempt to cheer her up, Makoto suggests that they go do some shopping. After a long day out, the two return home at sunset. As Makoto settles down inside of what looked to be Meme's room, he discusses with Meme about Erio's interview disappointments. Since this is Meme we're talking about, she is unable to stay serious for a long period of time so after a short discussion, she begins to flirt with Makoto, grossing him out. When Erio came in the room, she got mauled by Meme and the two start rolling around the room.

June 13. Early in the morning, Makoto and Erio start heading to the candy shop where Meme knew someone who would give Erio a job. After waking the old lady that owns the shop, the two learn that she knew both Erio's parents and Makoto's father. She reveals that Makoto's father loves animals more than humans which is apparently the complete opposite of Meme. The old lady goes on further and explains that the reason the animals in the city are slowly disappearing is because of "cattle mutilation". Due to the fact that cattle mutilation has something to do with aliens, Erio is obviously excited to hear more. Makoto on the other hand, decides to listen politely, pretending to understand with a uncertain "I see". Erio eventually got the job after the old lady stopped talking. The next episode is most likely going to be centered on Ryuuko with the "ko" part of her name being "important". Hopefully, more moe Erio will still show up. Looking forward to it.
