The Infinite Sparkles of Erio Touwa |
Wow, there's never a moment where Erio is not moe. The sparkles in her hair make it obvious that her beauty is being emphasized. I say Erio for the most moe character of Spring 2011! In terms of the episode, first two-thirds was boring hospital stuff with some fanservice (not sure if you can call it that?). Last third, focused on the Touwa family (Makoto included) and their interactions with each other. I would prefer more Erio in future episodes because, to me, she is the main reason I watch this anime.
Makoto starts by boring viewers with his "adolescence points" system that he obviously created. He explains, with detail, how one can gain points and during what circumstances more points are given. Apparently, flying off the edge of a cliff with a bicycle earned him +5 "adolescence points". However, he gets hospitalized in exchange. Personally, I wouldn't injure myself for 5 measly points that don't even matter in life. Anyways, it's weird how he is hospitalized just because he has a broken arm. I remember breaking a bone in my wrist and all I did was go to the hospital, get a cast and leave. Putting that aside, as Makoto walks back to his hospital room, he notices something under the sheets of his bed. On three separate occasions, he pulls off the sheet and is greeted with some fanservice courtesy of Ryuuko, Maekawa-san and Meme. Somehow, after this happened he is back in the bed with Meme in the room too. Guess it those were just images in his perverted mind. Makoto then recalls that Meme didn't question him or Erio when she ran to the hospital and saw them soaking wet. It surprised Makoto that she didn't even get angry and just signed the hospitalization papers without a word. His thinking would soon be interrupted with Meme's attempts at flirting with him. Instead of playing along, Makoto starts to ask about Erio's father. Whether or not she was lying, Meme tells him that the reason she and Erio's father separated was because of "different values". Going back to her flirtatious attitude, she tells Makoto that he is now the "replacement" husband. This freaks Makoto out and causes him to cover himself with the bed sheets, claiming he has a fever. Under the sheets, he tells himself that he thinks he just lost some adolescence points there. Sad times, Makoto.
A while after Meme leaves, Ryuuko shows up for a visit. I'm starting to like her character more and more because I'm beginning to see how moe she is. Her reaction to when Makoto called her cute was so funny! After realizing she messed the whole atmosphere up, Ryuuko decides to "start over" her visit and gives him the notes from class. Shortly after, she seriously asks him if he was trying to commit suicide or not. I guess she really cares about him. Makoto, realizing she knows what happened, reassures her that he wasn't trying to commit suicide. After a bit more talking, Maekawa-san walks, cosplaying as an eggplant. For me, I don't really like her character. I find her really weird. The two girls then strike at each other verbally, probably disliking the fact that the other is also friendly with Makoto. After Maekawa-san stirs up some misunderstandings, Ryuuko rushes out of the room in rage. Unfortunately for her, she forgot her helmet and bag. Just like Ryuuko, Maekawa-san also asks Makoto about his "jump into the sea". His responds by telling her that he was trying to fly. However, Maekawa-san notices that Erio must have been involved and indirectly tells him that she knows about it. On a totally unrelated note, she tells him that they should go to beach together sometime in the summer. At that moment, Ryuuko rushes back into the room, shoulder-charging Maekawa-san. The chibi-style animation made it much more amusing. After taunting Ryuuko with the possibility of Makoto being "way past the guys and girls going to the beach together" stage, Maekawa-san reveals to her that Makoto and Erio are cousins. Since his secret had been exposed, he tells them both that he also lives with Erio. This shocking truth causes the two girls' jaws to drop in surprise (although one Maekawa-san already knew about this).
Two weeks later, Makoto is discharged from the hospital. When he gets home, he sees the floor is littered with "welcome home" notes. Upon entering the kitchen, he sees another note saying that there's a cake in the refrigerator to celebrate his recovery. Upon opening the refrigerator, he is greeted with a blue-colored Meme who looked like she was dying from the cold. He jumps back in surprise and asks her if she is alright. After telling him that she is cold, she reveals that she was just acting and asks him to warm her up with his body. Unfortunately for her, Makoto responds by shutting the refrigerator door in her face. Then, he politely knocks on the door and, after she gives him permission to open it, demands to know why she was in there. In response, she calls him "no fun" and tells him that she worked "hard" to spend 5 minutes in there. After failing to have fun with him, she suggests that they go out to eat lunch to celebrate his recovery. She also tells him to call Erio down, which is apparently his job in the house. When he gets to Erio's room, she is wearing a futon again. I feared that the ending of the last episode was just used to get viewers' hopes up but was relieved when Erio took off the futon willingly. The presence of sparkles to emphasize Erio's beauty and elegance was nice eye-candy. As the three make their way to the restaurant, Makoto ends the episode with one of his many soliloquies. Though they are sometimes meaningful, it's easy to forget them. Anyhow, I really enjoyed this episode and I'm looking forward to the next one. Apparently, it's going to be Meme's birthday.
I also caught the reference to 5 Centimeters per Second and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
