Hanasaku Iroha - Episode 5

Yuina needs more screentime
Episode Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ (4/5)

As many people have predicted, it was a misunderstanding after all. I guess the producers are saving the really dramatic parts for later in the series since this is going to be a 26 episode series. It's good to see Minko softened up to Ohana a bit more. Yuina needs more screentime because she's such an interesting character. Finally, it seems like Kou-chan is thinking about visiting Ohana, considering he feel asleep while reading magazines about hot springs and the Northern Coast. In the end, I hope to see Kou x Ohana and Tohru x Minko.

Well, what do we have here? A changing scene already? That's quite surprising coming from Hanasaku Iroha. Fortunately (or unfortunately for some people), Minko doesn't expose herself any further. She is obviously still bothered by what she saw the other day and when Ohana tried to talk to her, she responds with words that are more hurtful than "Die". Ohana, obviously shocked by how she had just been verbally abused, falls to the floor, looking a bit light-headed. Just then, Nako and Tomoe return to the inn. After Ohana explains that she and Minko saw Yuina and Tohru on a motorcycle together the other day, both Nako and Tomoe are shocked too. And it wasn't just them that heard it. Mr. Erotic Novel Author was also eavesdropping and even asked Ohana to tell him the rest of the story. Meanwhile in the kitchen, the head chef, Ren, tells Minko that Tohru won't be coming today. Devastated, she demands to know why but forgets that her job is to prepare food, not ask questions.

While on her break, Minko walks by the bath area and overhears the four talking about Tohru. After hearing Jiroumaru-san talking about Tohru ditching Kissui Inn for Fukuya Inn, Minko storms in and threatens him with a grater. Unfortunately, she doesn't strike him in the end and runs back to the kitchen with her head down. Later that evening, while chopping Szechuan leaf peppers in the kitchen, Minko asks Ren why Tohru went to Fukuya. Because she wasn't concentrating on her task, she ends up wounding her finger with the knife. In the hallway, Ohana and Tomoe are carrying the dinnerware and suddenly see Minko run past them. Tomoe tells Ohana that Minko must be having a difficult time now because Tohru is gone. She goes on the tell Ohana that Tohru was the one who let Minko work here. A flashback shows Minko beg for the job in front of the Ohana's grandmother and Ren. Even though the two were hesitant to hire a girl with very little experience, Tohru agreed to train her himself. The reason why she likes Tohru may partly be because he finally gave her the opportunity to fulfill her dream of being a chef. After hearing that inspiring story, Ohana hurriedly rushes to Minko's room to talk to her. Before she gets there, Minko is seen to be staring intently at the knife Tohru had bought for her when she first started working at Kissui. When Ohana arrives, Minko is still in a foul mood. It's surprising how Ohana is still smiling after being disrespected so much. The result of having a conversation with Minko while she is still concerned about the possibility of her crush dating someone else is getting screamed at before being kicked out if the room. Poor Ohana doesn't even know what she did wrong. However, she realizes that falling in love is an incredible thing. At that moment, she remembers the text she got from Kou. Reminded of his confession, she wonders if he is feeling the same as Minko now because his crush had disappeared too. Meanwhile, Enishi just got off the phone with some really angry person and walks right into Ohana. Seeing that she wasn't doing anything at the moment, he forces her to help him with searching for a lantern. After a while of searching Ohana manages to find one. Upon looking at it closely, she discovers that there is a wishing note attached to it. Enishi explains that the wish of a diligent person will be granted if it is written on the note. With a good idea in mind, Ohana rushes back to Minko's room (not thinking twice about getting yelled at and kicked out again), scaring her, and tells her that they can bring Tohru back. However, Minko acts stubborn saying that she doesn't want to get in his way. Fed up with her pessimistic thinking, Ohana calls Minko a hobiron (taste of your own medicine?) and tells her that she will go to Fukuya by herself to bring Tohru back.

Midway through her run to Fukuya, she is attacked by the same grey heron from Episode 4. In the end, Ohana reaches Fukuya extremely tired. Inside Fukuya, Yuina is getting massage on a massage chair and tells her grandma that she hears something (Ohana struggling to get past the guards). Once the two go downstairs to the lobby, Ohana demands them to return Tohru to them. However, they are confused at what Ohana is saying. *cue Yuina's explanation of the misunderstanding*. It turns out that Torhu was only helping at Fukuya because one of their chefs caught a cold. The motorcycle incident was only because Yuina wanted to try riding on it. Nothing else. Yuina also reveals she was using a fake Hakata dialect. After hearing all this, Ohana looked dumbfounded but relieved. After making her way back to the Kissui slowly, Nako tells her that Tohru had come back. Back in the kitchen, Tohru is demanded to know who spread the rumors about him leaving Kissui to work at Fukuya. Upon hearing this, Jiroumaru-san hurriedly scrambles away to avoid getting annihilated. After cooling down, he presents Ren with the hypothetical situation of him actually leaving. While Ren did not respond, Minko firmly tells Tohru that she will definitely stop him. However, she quickly realizes how embarrassing those words are and apologizes. Later that night, Ohana has a quick chat with Tohru. Like always, he made fun of her for a bit before heading off on his motorcycle. This time, he adds the bonus of inducing a nosebleed after squeezing her sensitive nose. How nice of you, Tohru. After he leaves, Nako, Minko and Ohana decide to take a evening stroll together. Along the way, Minko tells Ohana to write down a nickname on a wishing note that she wants to be called by. After thinking for a long time about it, Minko snatches the wishing note away from Ohana, saying that time was up. Even begging for another chance proved futile. Meanwhile, Kou is seen sleeping after reading some magazines about the area where Ohana is right now. Beside him is his phone, now vibrating to tell him that he had received a text message. As the video zooms into the phone, Ohana is seen to be the first contact on his phone. I feel sorry for Kou because he'll probably never see the person he loves again unless he visits her by himself (which I think will definitely happen sometime in the future). Once again, Hanasaku Iroha doesn't disappoint with another fabulous episode. Looking forward to the next episode.
