Senki Zesshou Symphogear - Episode 5
Some interesting development for a show that I had thought of dropping. A new antagonist is introduced right off the bat, although her face isn't shown. An uninformative English phone call to what I presume to be a representative of America sets up the rest of the episode well. Surprisingly, the episode did not focus on the development of Hibiki. Instead, Ryōko's "other side" seems to be finally making its public appearance.
There are many reasons to suspect Ryōko after this episode. On the outside, it seems like she's just a regular, energetic scientist. However, through her actions and expressions in this episode, this does not seem like the case. Firstly, taking so long to return back to the HQ after what was supposedly a brief meeting, especially while driving at such high speeds, is a cause for suspicion. Added on to that is the fact that Ryōko returned with a briefcase that had a smear of blood on one corner. Furthermore, that briefcase looked to have belonged to Hiroki, who was just assassinated earlier by a bunch of English-speaking (now, who was speaking in English over the phone earlier...?) gunmen. And if that isn't enough, during the battle scene, when Ryōko let her hair down, she looked almost identical (with the exception of hair color) to the mystery blonde at the beginning. I believe the only reason she didn't reveal her true intentions for transferring Durandal then and there was because Hibiki amazingly awakened Durandal. Due to this surprising turn of events, I won't be surprised if Ryōko lays low for a bit longer in order to learn more about Hibiki and her potential.
As for the other characters, for some strange reason, I have a feeling Miku is going to find herself entering the world of Symphogears sometime soon. At the beginning Episode 1, it is implied that Hibiki died the same way that Kanade did. My guess is that this was done in order to stop Ryōko from carrying out her plans. And if Hibiki died this way, Miku will probably be able to get along with Tsubasa well, seeing as how their views/motivations are similar. What I'm most interested in now is how Tsubasa's going to react after she fully recovers and witnesses the internal chaos within the HQ, assuming her health returns right when Ryōko starts backstabbing everyone. Then again, this is all just a guess and none of it may actually happen. Anyhow, it's good to see that things are not too obvious; a good amount of mystery always entertains me. I'm not expecting too dramatic next episode, but I'm still looking forward to it.
