Ano Natsu de Matteru - Episode 5

Problem?

It turns out that the prologue isn't over yet. So with only seven episodes left, one may wonder whether or not the whole show is just going to be one long flashback up to the time when Ichika has to leave. But back to what happened in this episode, I thoroughly enjoyed the increased complication of the love polygon and Lemon's movie "script". To be honest, part of the reason why I'm continuing to watch this show is because of how amusing Lemon is. The way she effortlessly trolls the others is just amazing. Not to mention her analysis skills seem extremely sharp (it's as if she knows that Ichika is an alien). Ah, but let's not forget Rinon - my 2nd favorite character of the show. "It's" (I'm going to assume "genderless" here) actions during the non-serious portions of the show never fail to make me laugh.

Lemon's scriptwriting/directing in this episode reminded me slightly of Haruhi in Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu, when she ironically made the characters' roles in the movie (i.e. alien, time traveller, esper) match their true identities. Similarly, Lemon casted Ichika to play an alien in their movie, once again making it seem like she knows that Ichika is not human. But as one would come to expect from Lemon, when she gets her hands on a piece of valuable information, she'll take pleasure in observing how others deal with difficult situations pertaining to this information. If you were to, for a second, exclude the possibility of Lemon knowing about Ichika's true identity, another reason for her actions might be because she supports the Kaito x Ichika pairing. Personally, I'll be going with the former assumption; Lemon is undoubtedly smarter and more cunning than she looks. うふふ...

As for the love polygon, the two-in-one "plot twist & cliffhanger" combo certainly shook things up quite a bit. Thanks to Tetsurō, I have a feeling things are going to become really awkward for Kanna, Ichika and Kaito. Mio was right when she advised him not to meddle in other people's relationships, or risk getting hurt. Once Kanna finds out that he told Kaito about her feelings, she'll probably end up despising him, causing him to regret his actions. For Ichika, she now realizes there's competition and will probably be confused as to what she should do. The one who has it the worse is Kaito. Stuck between choosing someone who likes him and someone who he likes is definitely a cause for frustration. Even though I enjoy a fair bit of drama in my romantic comedies, Tetsurō's actions in this episode disappointed me. I understand that he wants to "help" Kanna since he likes her, but what good is it if he tells Kaito about her feelings? In fact, things'll probably end up bad for him no matter what the outcome is: Kanna will either hate him if Kaito rejects her, or end up with Kaito, making the result bittersweet. I think Mio is doing the right thing by waiting. She's more likely to avoid heartbreak if she quietly waits for her chance to make a move. Fortunately, Lemon is not involved in this mess. The more complicated the others' situation is, the more fun it is for her, I would say.

One guess I have about the content of the film is that it's a retelling of the fated meeting between Ichika and Kaito. Furthermore, I'm expecting the completed product to be shown near the end of the series, at the conclusion of the flashback, to remind Kaito of all the fun times that he had with Ichika "that summer" (あの夏). The "waiting" part (で待ってる) of the title is still a mystery to me, but I'm assuming that it's talking about Kaito waiting for Ichika's return. On a similar note, although I am enjoying this flashback, I'm still anxiously "waiting" for it to end, assuming there's more to the story after it.
