Senki Zesshou Symphogear - Episode 4

A perfect example of contrasting images

This was a very eventful episode, in my opinion. The episode was divided into three distinct parts, each of which added a lot to the story. Apart from the story, the animation quality was still a bit awkward in a few scenes. The BGM tracks used in this episode, on the other hand, sounded really nice and matched well with their respective scenes. Symphogear is slowly back on the rise again after a couple of disappointing episodes. I'm looking forward to seeing how everything unfolds now that Tsubasa is temporarily out of the picture.

The episode starts off with a flashback to the time when Kanade has just obtained her Symphogear. Back then, Tsubasa was a cheerful and innocent girl, a far cry from her current personality. In fact, just her outward appearance from before makes me like her better than how she is right now. I felt this flashback emphasized the close relationship between the Zwei Wing members, as well as further justifying Tsubasa's current behaviour.

For the majority of the battle scene between Tsubasa and that new girl, I found Hibiki to be quite annoying and a burden to Tsubasa. Yes, I do understand that she has no training whatsoever, unlike Tsubasa, but at least try not to drag others down with you. Anyhow, Tsubasa singing her Swan Song took me by surprise. It was so sudden and I didn't expect her to want to do so after seeing Kanade die the same way two years ago. My guess is that she was influenced by Kanade's commitment to her duty as a warrior, even to the point of putting one's life at risk to complete a task. I was also half-expecting Tsubasa to die like Kanade did but, in the end, she survives. Whether that is a good or bad thing will be determined later. But right now, she'll most likely be out of commission for a while, giving Hibiki the spotlight.

During the second half of the episode, I thought Hibiki got some major character development. While it was amusing to see her go through the same phases of self-blame and depression like Tsubasa did, when it comes down to it, Tsubasa's near-death situation was a wake-up call for her. It was nice seeing the desire to become stronger in Hibiki's eyes as she has now realized that, after seeing Tsubasa fight, she too has something she wants to protect. This something (specifically "someone") is none other than Miku. This new-found desire in Hibiki's life will probably be the driving force that allows her to continue moving forward even in the toughest times. Unfortunately, I don't see things ending well for her. At the end of the episode, Miku exhibits some yandere traits, creeping me out. I'm now interested in how she'll be integrated into the story. I'm expecting her to snap and start acting violent towards Hibiki sometime in the near future after she finds out Hibiki had been hiding the whole Symphogear thing from her, judging by the eerie "I won't hide anything from you" at the end of the episode.

There are a lot of different possible outcomes that arise after this episode. If I were to try and list all of them, this post would look more like an essay than it already is. So for now, I'll leave it at this. Let's see if the next episode will be able to affirm or disprove some of my thoughts.
