Shinryaku!? Ika Musume - Episode 5

怖いですか?

Episode Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ (4/5)

Alternating between anime and readings for finals.
Back to catching up with Ika Musume. What I love about this show is that you can easily watch it without paying too much attention to plot because there hardly is one. It's one of those anime which you can unwind with as almost all the stories are funny in their own way. This episode was no different. For me, I would have to say that the "forever alone" story was my favorite of the episode, simply because of how they made loneliness, something that is shunned by society, quite amusing and seemingly acceptable. Now it's off to Episode 6! (after I do some textbook readings that is)

ラジコンじゃなイカ!? (Isn't It Remote-Controlled!?)
This segment brings me back to my childhood memories where remote-controlled cars were one of the most awesome toys out there. So when Takeru showed off his new R/C car, Ika Musume obviously wanted to try it, too. A short (and dangerous) test run inside the house prompts Ika Musume to ask Takeru if she can try it outside. Takeru, however, does not agree and believes that it's safer inside. A while later, Takeru gets a phone call from his friend who apparently got some new game (Hedgehog Cart 2 = Sonic the Hedgehog + Mario Cart?) and excitedly rushes off in order to play it. This gives Ika Musume the chance to try out the car outdoors. At first, it was a lot of fun as the space limitation was virtually gone. However, once she got to the beach, Ika Musume loses sight of the car amidst the crowd of people. And when she does see it, it's already too late as the car ends up crashing into a wall, breaking itself in the process. Feeling guilty about her actions, Ika Musume hides the car and offers to become Takeru's R/C squid. As lame as it was, Takeru didn't have the heart to tell her that. Ika Musume's guilt even made her obey orders like "clean the bathroom", which surprised Eiko who then finds the broken R/C car in a drawer. Unable to take it any longer, Ika Musume, with tears in her eyes, tells Takeru what happened just as Eiko came back with the broken car. Masking his sadness with a forced smile, Takeru tells Ika Musume not to worry and runs off. A few days later, the R/C car ends up being fixed, thanks to the researchers from MIT. In fact, the car was now faster and had better handling. However, when Takeru pressed the mysterious MIT button on the remote control, the car suddenly transformed into a flying machine and took off into the sky. The story ends with an angry Eiko going off to find those three idiots.

七夕じゃなイカ!? (Isn't It Tanabata!?)
Click here for more information on Tanabata.
With the Beach House Lemon preparing for Tanabata, Ika Musume struggles to think of a wish for herself. Because it's technically supposed to be one wish per person, she has a hard time choosing a single wish. As the wishes of the people around her are slowly revealed, Ika Musume is still unable to think of a wish. In the end, when Takeru and his friends tell her that their wish is for invasion to succeed so that she can play with them more, Ika Musume finally decides on wishing for an ocean of shrimp. However, upon looking at the tree and seeing lots of wishes for "world peace" she starts to panic. Moreover, Chizuru, the three idiots, Sanae and Cindy's wishes of "I wish Ika Musume will work for us forever", "We wish we can examine Ika Musume", "I wish to be united with Ika-chan" and "I wish to examine the squid hat", respectively, causes Ika Musume to rethink her wish. She ends up changing it to "I wish to be safe." Seeing that wish brought a amused smile to my face.

一人遊びしなイカ!? (Won't You Play Alone!?)
Now that he's done all his summer homework, Takeru decides to call his friends to see if any of them want to go play. Unfortunately, none of them are free meaning that he's going to have to spend the day "forever alone." But not to worry, Ika Musume to the rescue! First, she suggests watching TV. For some reason, she is easily entertained by anything that's on TV, something that Takeru envies. Secondly, she suggests playing with the wall outside the house, saying how it is the perfect companion. However, after throwing a ball at the wall and having it bounce back into her face, inducing a nosebleed (of ink), the two decide to head somewhere else where they can enjoy being alone. This place turns out to be a park. There, Ika Musume shows Takeru things that people can do alone like reading, jogging and crying under a tree while drinking (yes, there was a man who was shown doing exactly that). For the rest of the day, Ika Musume and Takeru went their own ways, trying to enjoy their time alone. For Ika Musume, she had much more success; she ended up following an ant that bit her. During the "stalking" she witnesses the ant getting hard-earned food stolen from it and a bunch of kids blocking the entrance to the ant's home with a rock. Angered by this, Ika Musume scares the kids away and unblocks the hole in the ground, allowing her "friend" (the ant) to go home. Back at the Aizawa residence, Takeru retells the day's events to Eiko and Chizuru. After hearing about it, Eiko asks the two why they were playing alone when they could've just played with each other - a question that both Ika Musume and Takeru had no answer to.
