Usagi Drop - Episode 3

Ugh... Annoying Reina's hairstyle. Good thing Rin went back to her old hairstyle after this
Episode Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★  (5/5)

One of the better episodes in terms of development. It's really nice to see Daikichi's parents accepting Rin, despite the fact that she's his mother's half-sister. Also, Daikichi sacrificing his position at the company so he can spend more time with Rin must have been a tough position for him to make. His personality is a good break from all the idiotic male leads that appear every season. But I still wonder how things will change when he meets Rin's mother, since the meeting is inevitable. Great story so far and I'm looking forward to seeing how everything else unfolds.

One day, a program about disease appears on TV while Rin is watching. Upon hearing about sickness and death, she demands that it be turned off and honestly asks Daikichi if she's going to die too. After assuring her that she is too young to worry about that stuff, Daikichi suggests that she go take a bath. And that is just one example of what daily life for Rin and Daikichi is like. Like always, after dropping Rin off at the nursery, Daikichi rushes to work. While at work, his subordinate questions his recent early departures from the workplace as opposed to being the last one to leave in the past. Not wanting to explain his certain situation, Daikichi just says that he doesn't want to work as hard as he used to. As the two enter the elevator, another co-worker, Goutou-san, joins in too and, while it goes up, Daikichi starts chatting with her. It turns out that she's a mother of a two-year-old child and requested a demotion so that she could spend time with her child. Because of this, Daikichi decides to explain the situation to her while the two eat together at a restaurant. Later that night, after Rin had gone to bed, Daikichi gets a call from his mother, who asks about Rin is doing well. Daikichi then tells her that he and Rin will be going over to her house next weekend before visiting his grandfather's house where he plans to search for clues relating to Rin's mother. Unfortunately, he also says he's going to call Haruko, who will undoubtedly bring along Annoying Reina.

When the weekend arrived, Rin and Daikichi head out and travel by train to Daikichi's mother's house. Along the way, Rin looked extremely happy and excited but when they arrived, everything changed. While they are eating, Rin barely touches her food and says she's full despite eating so little. Shortly after, Daikichi's sister, Kazumi, shows up and her whining scares Rin. Later in the day, while Rin is asleep, Daikichi criticizes his sister for whining earlier because that caused Rin to think that she caused the anger. His criticism got to the point of an insult which resulted in an orange thrown at his face. The next day (I'm assuming this since Rin is wearing different clothes), in an attempt to cheer Rin up, Daikichi's mother brings in some special string for Rin to play cat's cradle with. After watching Daikichi's mother fail at making a cat's cradle, Rin shows off her amazing skills by producing a four-step ladder, a two-step ladder, an airplane, a slide and a diamond in rapid succession. Seeing that Rin is skilled with her hands, Daikichi's mother decides to teach Rin otedama and leaves to room in search for beanbags. As for Rin, she begins to teach Daikichi's father, who had just walked in, how create things using the string. After returning with the beanbags and teaching Rin how to play with them, Haruko and Reina (unfortunately) arrive. Unlike me, Rin isn't bothered by Reina's personality. While the two girls play with the beanbags, Haruko praises Daikichi for being able to juggle a job and raising a child so well.

After spending the rest of the day searching his grandfather's home, Daikichi returns to his mother's house, empty-handed (although he did manage to find a modem behind one of the drawers). To his surprise, Rin greets him with her hair looking like Reina's. On top of that, she was dressed up in random clothes by Kazumi. After going to the kitchen to escape from the fashion show going on in the other room, Daikichi learns from his father about how his mother worked very hard in raising both him and his sister. At the end of the day, before leaving, Rin tries to secretly ask Daikichi is they can come again. Amused by this, Daikichi decides to tell everyone about Rin's question, shocking them. Daikichi's mother then tells her to come back anytime before Rin waves goodbye with a big smile on her face. Such a sweet scene! On the train ride home, Daikichi learns that Masako-san, Rin's mother and his grandfather's maid, used to be extremely mean to Rin, which caused her to forget everything about her mother. And after another chat over some food with Gotou-san and understanding Rin's fears about wetting the bed, Daikichi finally understood that the child he is caring for now must be his priority in life; something that is even more important than his work. Because of this, Daikichi requests a to be transferred to another department in which he doesn't have to work overtime the next day, shocking both his supervisor and subordinate (with his subordinate sounding like he is going to die without Daikichi by his side at work). Once that grueling task is complete, Daikichi focuses on giving the best for Rin, despite knowing that he has just sacrificed some of his salary for a child that isn't even his. Despite this, he hopes that, one day, he will be able to view this, not as a sacrifice, but as something positive. Short scene after the ED introduces Rin's black rabbit which Daikichi mistakes for a dog. After confirming that Rin had went to the toilet, Daikichi allows her to sleep. Though this episode may have sounded boring after reading this summary, some of Daikichi's words and thoughts (which I haven't mentioned) really show how much he cares about Rin. Despite being the guardian of an illegitimate child whom he didn't even have to take care of in the first place, Daikichi rose to the occasion and proved that, out of every capable person in his family, he is the one who can give Rin the best. Keep up the good work, Daikichi and looking forward to more of your interactions with Rin.
