The rocket that is made out of fireproof plastic... o_o |
Not really a fan of Meme so this episode was a bit boring for me. Also, this episode was mostly a recap of the last few episodes with the story being told from Meme's point of view. It's true that some missing parts of the story were filled in during this episode but, personally, I believed that this episode wasn't necessary. Nonetheless, the rocket launching at the end made the experience a bit more enjoyable and worthwhile.
June 7th. Meme has just turned 40 and, like always, starts being random. After seeing this scene, it's quite obvious that this is going to be a Meme-centered episode. Oh, joy... June 9th. Since this is before Erio gets the job at Tamura Market, Meme is now attempting to find a job for Erio. Before that, she stops at the store where she is the manager at. That shop, ironically, is where Maekawa-san works. After her visit to the store, Meme heads over to Tamura Market where she gets a chance to talk to the owner. There, she begins the conversation with some random nonsense about aliens which may explain why the old lady is so obsessed with cattle mutilation. With the topic of cattle mutilation not working for the conversation, Meme then asks the old lady if she remembers how she felt when she turned 40. This reminded the old lady that it was Meme's birthday a few days ago and offers to give a piece of a candy for free. At this, Meme starts carrying the old lady to the front of the store where the candy is. Right after exiting the room, she tells the old lady that she will get rid of the aliens, implying that the old lady is being bothered by the possibility of the existence of aliens. She also suggests that the old lady let Erio work here.
June 12. After finishing her plastic bottle rocket, named S.S. June 12, Meme takes it out to the mysterious plastic bottle rocket launching guy. When she approaches him and attempts to introduce herself, he seems to be taken aback, explaining that he lived in this city until middle school which implies that he went to the same school as her. Unfortunately for him, she doesn't remember and labels him as Yamamoto-kun, which is not his name. It is obvious that he likes her because, even though she doesn't remember his name, he still tries to hint that he would like to go out with her when he tells her he's single. I'm not sure if Meme is dense or just acting, but she ignores his comment and brings out the rocket, telling him that she wants to help him launch one. After a successful launch, he asks her why she made the rocket, hoping that she woould say something good about him. Instead, she tells him that the rocket is for getting rid of aliens. Even though he doesn't understand how that works, the fact that she is willing to bring more to launch makes it worthwhile for him. After asking him to do a favor for her and telling him that Elliot is no longer around, Meme skips away cheerfully. However, he stops her and asks her to marry him all of sudden. The topic of marriage causes her to think back to when she first realized that she loved Elliot, the foreign kid whose eyes aren't shown in the flashback. This happened 28 years ago when Tamura market was still around. Even in the past, the owner still believed that her time to die was near. Because she was 12 (40 - 28) at the time, death was very frightening. After being unable to think of how to prevent cattle mutilation, Elliot walks up to Meme and suggest getting rid of the aliens. Back at home, the sudden proposal causes Meme to start thinking.
June 19. The day where Meme starts spying on Erio and runs into Ryuuko. The same thing occurs where Meme sneaks up behind Ryuuko and almost causes her to fall. On Meme's side, the cola was given to Ryuuko so the empty bottle could be used to build another plastic bottle rocket. Back in the flashback, Elliot tells Meme that the only way to reach things that cannot be seen is through faith, which can be materialized by ceremony and prayer. To be honest, I have no idea what he is talking about. A short while after, Meme goes to see "Yamamoto" once again. This time, for two reasons: to launch plastic bottle rockets and to reject his marriage proposal. Even after seeing his surprised and pleading face, Meme politely turns him down. His explanation of how he has liked her ever since they were kids had no effect either. Meme tells him that she doesn't intend to get married any time soon because she is already happy enough, even without a husband in her family right now. She also reveals that she and Elliot were never married. Realizing that there is no need to continue his pursuit, "Yamamoto" decides to settle for "just friends". After he finishes watering the nearby flowers, the two sit down and start talking. "Yamamoto" reveals that he is shooting the rockets so Erio would see them, hoping that this would impress Meme. However, the misunderstanding begins here. After he describes Erio as being 180cm tall, Meme quickly realizes that he is talking about Maekawa-san. Surprised at his error, "Yamamoto" defends his claim by saying that he heard rumors amount Erio walking around in something weird (not knowing what this "something" is made a huge difference). However, Meme reminds him that Erio only wrapped herself in a futon up until April while he came back in May. With his plan now ruined, "Yamamoto" reveals that he paid Maekawa-san to build plastic bottle rockets just so he could get closer to Meme. After hearing that he now has lots of rockets, Meme is overjoyed as the "ceremony" will now be even grander. She then asks him if he had finished what she asked him to do and, after he confirms it, she thanks him and rests her head on his back. Then, Meme returns home and, after telling Maekawa-san to get Erio and the others to make more plastic bottle rockets, leaves the house together with her. While Maekawa-san goes to get some materials, Meme goes over to Tamura Market and, after some convincing, gets the old lady to agree with going to the beach tomorrow. With her plan now ready for action, the aliens better watch out.
The next day, Meme and the owner of the Tamura Market find a place that allows them to oversee the beach. Below them, "Yamamoto", Makoto, Erio, Ryuuko and Maekawa-san prepare for the launching of the plastic bottle rockets. After asking if they are ready yet, each person below responds and, to the old lady's surprise, she remembers hearing all their voices before (except Maekawa-san). Once ready, Meme gives the nod and the rockets start launching. With the first few groups of rockets failing to fly high (including Erio's defective rocket), Meme assures the old lady that there is more to come. When all the rockets seem to have been launched, a final rocket, one that, for some reason, has fire instead of water coming out of its end, flies straight up into the sky, far surpassing the height of all the previous ones. When this rocket reaches its highest point, it explodes. The explosion seems to have done its job as the old lady looks a bit rejuvenated as she believes that the explosion got rid of the aliens. On a side note, "Yamamoto's" real name turns out to be Ashiro according to the old lady. During their conversation, the old lady says that, once she is dead, she plans to give the shop to Erio. To wrap up the episode, Meme tells the old lady, who turns out to be her grandmother, that she wants to go to her grandfather's grave as she finally knows what she wants to say to him. With that being said, the episode ends on a peaceful note. Judging by the title of the next episode, I hope that aliens will finally make an appearance. However, my hopes aren't too high. Nonetheless, still looking forward to it.
