Hidan no Aria - Episode 6

It's funny seeing what memories can do
Episode Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ (4/5)

The start of the Shirayuki arc and the fight for Kinji. Being the typical dense protagonist that he is, Kinji doesn't realize that Shirayuki and Aria are all over him. In turn, these two girls fight to see who can get to him first. It's the battle of the tsundere vs. the yandere. Who will win? Who knows. But judging from direction that the story is heading in (and the title of the anime, of course), the ending will most likely be Kinji x Aria with Shirayuki joining the EU and turning into an antagonist. Well, that is just my guess and won't be surprised whether it is correct or incorrect. As for this episode, it was mostly Shirayuki fighting with Aria and background information about Shirayuki.

While observing Shirayuki and Aria destroy his dorm as they are fighting, Kinji takes the opportunity to enlighten viewers about Shirayuki's backstory and her Choutei (a Butei with superpowers) training at a place called the SSR. Apparently, Shirayuki comes from a line of shrine maidens (this explains her attire) who possess powers that are unimaginable. According to Kinji, she is a top student at the SSR. Simply put, you don't want to mess with Shirayuki; unless you're an S-Rank Butei like Aria that is. As he finishes his story, he looks back and sees everything inside his dorm is completely demolished. Just when he thought the fighting was over, Shirayuki starts to heat things up again by bringing up the topic of love, something that Aria supposedly hates. When asked if she and Kinji are in a relationship, Aria outright denies it but makes it worse by telling Shirayuki that Kinji is her "slave". Thinking that it meant "sex slave", Shirayuki is jealous but admits that she fantasized about it too - except that she was the slave. In the end, Kinji had to clear up the misunderstanding because he is the only one Shirayuki would listen to. Unfortunately, she then brought up the topic of kissing and it was quite obvious that Kinji and Aria were reminded of the same incident that happened in the last episode. Just as Shirayuki reveals some more deadly weapons, Aria tells her not to worry because, even though she did kiss Kinji, she did not get pregnant. Yes, Aria thinks kissing leads to pregnancies. When  she said that, my jaw just dropped in shock. Kinji and Shirayuki's reactions were both similar to mine. Shirayuki even fainted a short while after. And the person who told Aria this absurd piece of information? It was her father, someone who never had, and shouldn't, make an appearance considering the lies he has fed his innocent daughter.

The next day at school, while walking down the hallway, Kinji sees Shirayuki exiting the girls changing room. When he tried to talk to her, she just ignored him and left, making him think that she's still mad about yesterday's events. In class, while the teacher was talking about an event called Adseard, Kinji notices Aria reading a book (which included pictures and diagrams) about how babies are made. After asking her why she was reading it, she immediately gets up, calls him a pervert, and smashes the spine of the book in his face, inducing a nosebleed and making him fall out of his chair. Later in the day, Kinji makes his way to a place near the school grounds where he and Aria were supposed to meet. A while after not seeing her, she approaches him from behind and covers his eyes, telling him that he needs to be more careful about leaving his back wide open. Upon turning around to face her, he is greeted with some fanservice, courtesy of the cheerleading outfit she was wearing. It turns out that Aria will be cheerleading for Adseard and she is out here to practice. The reason that she wanted him here was because she had found out about his Hysteria Mode (but thinks its a split personality) and wanted to train him so he can activate it easier. Her idea of training is apparently sword-edge catching. The first step of the process is to imagine the sword coming down and catching it. While he does his this, Aria starts practicing her cheerleading in front of him. However, he is unable to concentrate when Aria starts doing cartwheels because of the always captivating panty shot. Later that day, Aria finds out that the training had failed when she came out of nowhere and hit Kinji with a wooden sword. Determined to help him because she thinks it's her responsibility, she tells him that they will resume the training tomorrow. A short while later, they hear an intercom message calling for Shirayuki. Curious about it, the two decide to eavesdrop. While making their way towards the room where Shirayuki would be in via an air vent, Aria tells Kinji that Shirayuki tried to kill her today. She explains that, throughout the day, she was bombarded with multiple traps, including a wire meant to cut her neck that was placed across the opening of her locker in the girls changing room (this explains why Shirayuki was there earlier). Once they are able to eavesdrop on the conversation, they learn that, according to her teacher that smokes, Shirayuki had been acting strangely on top of getting low test scores. She goes on to say that there is a possibility of someone named "Durandal" targeting Shirayuki. The name "Durandal" also got a reaction out of Aria. To prevent anything from happening to Shirayuki, the teacher suggests the hiring of a bodyguard. After hearing that, Aria reveals herself to them and offers to be Shirayuki's bodyguard, free of charge. At first she refuses to let Aria be her body guard but after some prompting from the teacher, she accepts but on two conditions: Kinji would also be her bodyguard and she will live with him. At that moment, I felt sorry for Kinji because he keeps getting dragged into problems that don't even relate to him.

Back at his dorm, Kinji realizes the thing he really wanted was a peaceful and quiet life. Unfortunately, he is stuck with a tsundere and yandere living under the same roof with him. After Shirayuki goes off to clean the house, Kinji discusses the topic of Durandal with Aria. Apparently, if Aria catches Durandal, she will be able to decrease her mother's sentence once again; this time to 635 years. If this arc is similar to Riko's, the antagonist they will fight against will be Durandal. However, I slightly doubt this. After Kinji pisses Aria off by repeatedly denying the existence of Durandal because of there is no evidence to prove it, she tells him to start working by checking the dresser in the corridor for dangerous items. Being the obedient guy that he is, Kinji checks it and, to his horror, sees that they are full of frilly undergarments which, to him, are dangerous. Deciding not to scar himself any more, he enters the kitchen. There, he sees Shirayuki freaking out over a broken bottle of cold medicine. At dinner, Shirayuki prepared a big feast for Kinji and only Kinji. Annoyed, Aria demands to know why she has nothing on her side of the table. In response to her demand, Shirayuki gives Aria a bowl of rice. This apparently pissed Aria off even more and the two begin to threaten each other again. Amidst the chaos, Kinji quietly eats his dinner.

One day after school, while Kinji and Shirayuki are talking, it is revealed that the two are childhood friends which partly explains why she is so obsessed with him. Thinking about the past, he realized that he must have pitied Shirayuki because she had barely any freedom due to her status as a shrine maiden. Back at the dorm, while Kinji was taking a shower, Shirayuki receives a phone call from Kinji asking for help. However, it was obvious that it wasn't Kinji because he didn't bring his phone into the shower with him. This leaves one explanation: a villain who is able to manipulate voices. With this type of antagonist, many misunderstandings are bound to be formed. While talking to him about the mysterious phone call, Shirayuki realized that Kinji was naked (well, not quite. He had boxers on) and started freaking out. Somehow she thought that it is only fair if he saw her naked. But to Kinji, the last thing he wanted to do was to create more misunderstandings between him and Aria. So to prevent Shirayuki from stripping herself, he tries restraining her. Unfortunately, Aria comes home from shopping at the wrong moment and sees the two in an awkward position. While calling him many unpleasant names, she starts firing shots from her pistols, causing him to jump jump over the balcony rail and into the sea. When he surfaces, all he can hear is the argument between Aria and Shirayuki. The stress of living with those two crazy human beings, coupled with the coldness of the water, finally took its toll, leaving him with a cold. And that ends the first episode of the Shirayuki arc. The next episode will most likely be partly about Kinji dealing with his cold. Reki also makes another appearance. Looking forward to it.
