A Channel - Episode 7

花火のすごい
Episode Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ (4/5)

Karaoke and summer festivals, two significant parts of Japanese culture. As the four girls enjoy the rest of their summer together doing typical Japanese things, it made me want to go to Japan and do the same. Though I won't be going anytime in the near future due to school, I am certainly enjoyed this anime's portrayal of these enjoyable Japanese extra-curricular activities. With summer finally over after three episodes, I can conclude that I enjoyed watching these three episodes as they provided me with satisfying light-hearted comedy that one would expect when watching A Channel.

As their summer is coming to an end, Run and Tooru talk a bit about school while enjoying a nice refreshing popsicle. For Run, going back to school will be fun because, being the popular girl that she is, she will get to see everyone again. Tooru, on the other hand, dreads the thought of going back to school because she will have to deal with Yutaka again. To get her thoughts off having to see Yutaka again, Tooru asks Run about her status with the boys at school and if she had ever been confessed to. At first, it looked like Run did get confessed to as it seemed like she was trying to recall something but she ended up pulling out the candle that Satou-sensei gave her and started talking about how he said he liked candles. Tooru, however, didn't believe Satou-sensei was talking about the candle. Run's clueless personality is always so funny, especially when everyone realizes something that she doesn't. This time was no different.

Later in the day, Run, Tooru, Yuuko and Nagi meet up at a café and discuss possible places to spend the day at. Run is the first to bring up an idea and shows the others a paper promoting the fireworks festival that is held annually. With it being a good idea, everyone agrees to go. However, it is held on the weekend so the problem of having nowhere to go today still exists. Once again, Run, despite her looks, comes up with another great idea. However, the reason she wanted to go to karaoke was not to sing. Instead, it was, yes, you guessed it, the food. After the suggestion of going to karaoke, Tooru is the only one who seemed to be a bit uneasy about it. Once they rented a karaoke box, the first thing Run does is order food and drinks. First up to sing is Yuuko, who delivers a decent performance. Next up was Run, who was not too bad herself. Unfortunately for Tooru, her singing was interrupted by the arrival of Run's order of jambalaya and fries. Third up was Nagi, who sand her heart out with a fiery passion (though I didn't like the song). Being a supportive friend, Run decides to do a duet with Tooru so the pressure of singing alone would be alleviated. The two put on a spectacular show which prompted Nagi and Yuuko to take out pair of maracas and a tambourine, respectively. After a while of singing, the girls hear someone singing next door. While Yuuko though the man on the other side was a good singer, Tooru was a bit suspicious because his voice was familiar. After listening to him sing a bit longer, Tooru knew who it was and immediately stopped Run from singing. Soon, the Nagi and Yuuko also realize who it was. The man in the other room was none other than Satou-sensei who was spending the rest of his summer days alone.

When the weekend finally arrived, Tooru and Run were busy picking out which yukata to wear to the fireworks festival. After deciding on yukatas, shoes were up next. Since the shoes she has doesn't fit Tooru, Run decides to get some of her old ones. While Run was off looking for them, Tooru notices a pair of high-heels. Thinking that they looked adult, she attempts to try them on but had an extremely difficult time balancing. Dejected, she concluded that she will never be an adult at this rate. A while later, the two girls show Run's mom their choice of yukatas. After praising the girls on their appearance, she kindly reminds them that the festival isn't until the evening (it was still ten in the morning). When the time of the festival finally arrived, the girls met up with each other and started browsing the stalls as the launching of the fireworks weren't until later on at night. After spending most of her money, Run wanted to do something that could take up time but didn't cost a lot. It turns out that Nagi found the perfect activity that fit Run's needs: candy carving. While it was only a few hundred yen per piece, it took patience and precision to accurately carve the piece of candy. The girls got so immersed in the carving that they didn't hear the announcement that notified everyone about the start of the fireworks. Luckily for them, Run knew of a secret place at the top of a nearby hill that barely any people know of. After the girls climb up the long flight of steps, they make it in time to see the brilliant fireworks. The end, however, didn't feel as spectacular as they expected it to be. In order to satisfy their desire for more fireworks, Yuuko takes out the sparkler package that she won earlier at a ring toss stall. While the sparklers burned, the girls look back at the fun summer they spent together. The memories of going to the beach, the school at night, karaoke, and this festival are something they will all cherish forever. I wouldn't have minded it if this episode was the last one of the series. I felt that the ending left me with a sense of warmth, with the girls tightening their bonds of friendship. On the other hand, I am happy that there's more A Channel because I have enjoyed watching this series overall. As for the next episode, the girls are finally back in school. What hilarious situations will the girls get into during this semester? Only time will tell. Looking forward to the next episode.
