A Channel - Episode 6

Yuuko's fear of darkness is so moe
Episode Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ (4/5)

More random hilarity as expected. This episode features an adventure through the school at night. Just like Mio from K-ON (yes, I will constantly compare K-ON and A Channel), Yuuko is also scared of dark places which in and of itself is bound to make for some great comedy. I enjoyed the episode but felt that A Channel is slowly categorizing itself with the slice-of-life shows that everyone will soon forget after the season is over. Not enough memorable moments and, most importantly, interesting characters will lead to audience numbers declining. As for me, I'm quite sure that I will stick around until the season ends simply because I am a bit biased towards slice-of-life shows; fueled by my longing for every anime in this genre to be like K-ON. In my opinion, this Yuuko-centered episode was better than Episode 4 (a Nagi-centered episode).

Not much time has passed since the last episode as it is still summer in the world of A Channel. One sunny afternoon (I'm assuming it's the afternoon because Run is energetic and awake), Run goes to Tooru's house to share some ice cream. Upon entering Tooru's room, Run sees no one. After a long while of looking around, Tooru's voice is heard from somewhere near the side of the bed facing the wall. Curious about it, Run goes to the source of the voice and sees Tooru, stuck between the wall and the bed. Instead of helping her poor friend out, Run decides to take advantage of the opportunity and tickles Run before snapping some photos with her phone camera. After getting her dose of entertainment, she helps Tooru and the two finally get to enjoy their ice cream. While eating, Run notices that Tooru's bangs have gotten longer and offers to cut them. Whenever Run offers to do something that requires precision or artistic talents, it is best to expect the worst. In this case, Tooru ends up with a not-so pleasant hairstyle that makes her fear going to school. However, Run easily solves that problem by unknowingly exploiting Tooru's weakness: Tooru's affection for anything related to her. By making Tooru's hair look the same as hers, she made Tooru forget all about the bad haircut. Tooru's blushing at Run's comment about being the same sent out some creepy yuri vibes.

A couple of weeks later (I'm assuming that a bit of time has passed because Tooru's bangs have grown back), Tooru goes over to Run's house to wake her up for the mid-vacation school day. After struggling to wake up the always-sleepy Run and being forced to take off her long-sleeved sweater, Tooru is finally able to go to school with Run. On the way, Run, who was still half-asleep, stumbles into a sign that warned readers about molesters. Ironically, Satou-sensei had just come up behind them in his car and offered the two girls a ride. Unfortunately, Run mistakes him for a pedophile and starts screaming while running with Tooru towards school. This commotion caused all the people walking by to stare and misunderstand. Poor Satou-sensei tried to do something positive but was labelled as something negative. At school, both first and second year students were handed forms that asked them about their future plans. After class, Tooru notices that her teacher looked a bit pale and asked her about it. At first, Kitou-sensei was happy that Tooru cared and told her that she had a headache. However, once Tooru suggested that she head to the infirmary for medicine, her mood changed, It turns out that Kitou-sensei and Satou-sensei are not on good terms which is why Kitou-sensei tries to stay away from the nurse's office in any way possible, even if it means not getting medicine for her headache. When Satou-sensei appears and a fight between Kitou-sensei and him start, Tooru just looks on, shocked. She quickly slips away after their argument escalated to the point where they were going to ask her to decide which one of them was better. After seeing that she was gone, they start arguing about who "stepped on" her. I wonder how small she looks in their minds. Later in the day, Yuuko sees what looked to be a distress signal in the form of a waving flag coming from the first years' classroom. Thinking that it was a fire, she quickly rushes there with a mop and bucket of water. However, when she enters the classroom, she quickly realizes that the black flag was actually rags used to wipe the chalkboard. Apparently, the rags were being shaken outside the window so the chalk dust could be cleaned off them. All of this was Yutaka's idea so Miho forces her to apologize. Tooru, seeing that Yuuko is easily embarrassed by apologies, takes the opportunity to repeatedly apologize for not stopping Yutaka from carrying out that stupid idea.

Later that evening, Yuuko realizes that she forgot to bring home the sheet about one's future plans that was handed out at school earlier in the day. After being annoyed by a massive amount of texts and finding out that Yuuko is scared of going alone, Nagi, with a cruel idea sprouting in her mind, decides to accompany her. Upon arriving late, Yuuko sees Nagi already there, along with Run and Tooru. However, the other three were already inside the school gates because they went through the back door. Now Yuuko had to do the same but with a deadly handicap: a large dog that looked mad. After barely making it into the school safely, the four girls' night adventure in the school begins. Since they are only on the school grounds, they needed to find a way to get into the school. After a while of fail lock-picking, Run shows up on the other side of the door, startling the other three momentarily. Once she let the other three in, Run reveals that she climbed into the school through an open window. Careless school staff these days... Much to the displeasure of Yuuko, Nagi and the other two girls decide to go exploring inside the school since it's nighttime and the experience would be nice. After a good, long while of exploring, Yuuko decides to take a washroom break. After forcing Nagi to go with her so she wouldn't be scared, the two spot what looked like a hitodama and hurriedly run out of the washroom to tell Run and Tooru. After finding a safe place to hide, Tooru bravely leaves the rest of the group in an attempt to find out where the hitodama was. Personally, I wasn't that surprised when the supposed hitodama was actually Satou-sensei holding a candle. After finding out about their situation, he proceeds to tell him about the candle. To him, the flame on a candle really relates to him because it is frail too. Upon saying that, Tooru blows out the candle, causing Satou-sensei to faint too. After struggling to bring him to the infirmary, Run attempts to wake him up by repeatedly slapping him. As he regains consciousness, he fantasizes about Run pleading him not to die which leads him embracing her. Seeing someone else show their affection for Run pissed Tooru off and caused her to flip Satou-sensei's bed over, knocking him out cold again. The four girls then leave him alone and go home. Now you might be thinking, "what about the future plans sheet that Yuuko was supposed to get?" Well on the way home, Yuuko finally realized that she wasted her whole night at the school by getting scared countless times on top of not remembering her initial objective. That night, unable to sleep because of fear, Yuuko ends up sleeping with a big stuffed teddy bear tightly held in her arms. For the audience, it an awesome dose of moe. And the always-exciting episode centered on karaoke is up next. Looking forward to it.
