A Channel - Episode 5

Obligatory fanservice in the obligatory beach episode is obligatory
Episode Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ (4/5)

The obligatory beach episode has arrived. The theme of "cute girls doing cute things" was really emphasized in this episode. Lots of kawaii, moe and suteki moments too. A Channel is continuing to remind of K-ON! (watch K-ON!'s Episode 4 was it's obligatory beach episode). Yuuko and Run especially remind me of Mio and Yui, respectively. All in all, a great episode because the producers didn't go over the top with the fanservice.

It's summer and with it comes the perfect time to go the beach. In preparation, Run buys Tooru a swimsuit. Unforunately, it is too big (even though Run picked the smallest size) and the bottom piece falls off after Tooru puts it on. Embarrassed about it, she immediately hides under the covers, shivering. Run, on the other hand, just stares at Tooru with those blank eyes of hers. A short while later, Yuuko walks into the room, bringing along a bag of ice cream. Not too long after sitting down, she notices Tooru shaking under the blanket and questions Run about it. Instead of giving a response, Run changes the subject and talks about the ice cream instead. The talk of ice cream must have made Tooru change her mind because at that moment, she leaps out from under the covers and declares that she would like some ice cream too. Unfortunately for her, she forgot that she was naked and has just embarrassed herself in front of Yuuko too.

The next day at school, the first-years apparently had a class where they were allowed to swim in the school's pool. Lucky kids... In the changing room, Yutaka notices that every area on Tooru's swimsuit was faded except the chest area. Tooru then explains that she had been wearing the same swimsuit since elementary school, which shocked both Yutaka and Miho. To be honest, I didn't get why the faded colors have anything to do with it. While the first-years were enjoying their time in the pool, the second-years were suffering in gym class. After finally getting a break from running, the three girls notice the first-years having fun in the pool. As the rest of the class makes their way toward the teacher, Nagi is subconsciously walking towards the pool, in hopes of getting the refreshing water splashed on her. Yuuko and Run notice this and attempt to restrain her from going to the pool. It's funny how the teacher sees the three fooling around and doesn't even care. Best teacher ever.

During lunch, Run brings up the idea of going to the beach sometime in the summer. While Yuuko agrees to this, Tooru and Nagi are not so happy about it. When Yuuko tries to convince them to go, the two start sarcastically making comments about her nice physical appearance. After all this, Run tells the other three that she would prefer to go to the beach with everyone. The next weekend, Yuuko brings Nagi along to go shopping with her. Fast-forward a bit and the two arrive at a store that sells swimsuits. Yuuko, who is captivated by how kawaii the swimsuits look, walks in first. Nagi reluctantly follows soon after, not wanting to be left behind. After a while, Yuuko returns and asks Nagi to take a look at the different swimsuits she wants to try on. With that nice body of hers, Yuuko made all the swimsuits look good. I'm sure that Nagi's jealously increased with every swimsuit. While waiting for Yuuko to get more swimsuits to try on, Nagi gets bored and decides to check out some of the swimsuits too. In the end, Nagi bought a swimsuit even though she said she wouldn't. Now that Nagi has willingly bought a swimsuit, Yuuko decides to ask Run and Tooru if they would like to go to the beach. A quick reply from Run made it 3/4 girls going. Now Tooru is the only one left. When Tooru returns home, her mom tells her that Run had just come over and left a gift for her. After she opens it inside her room, Tooru sees that the gift was a swimsuit that Run used to wear. She then creepily starts holding it tightly like something very precious. And with that, all four girls are now going to the beach together.

After the closing ceremony at school, the four girls make their way to the train station and prepare to enjoy the beginning of their summer. When they finally make it to the beach, fanservice hajimeru. The next five minutes consists of cute girls doing cute things at the beach (playing in the water, building a sand castle, beach volleyball, admiring the waves, etc.). The insert song was fitting in terms of rhythm. A little conversation on the train back home reveals that Run didn't put any sunscreen on and yet didn't tan at all. Overall, I enjoyed this episode because it didn't go over the top with fanservice just like K-ON!. So far, A Channel is a decent show but I'm hoping that there will be a bit more focus on a main topic (like music is the main focus of K-ON!). Nonetheless, I will continue to watch A Channel because I find the characters likable and funny. Looking forward to the next episode.
