Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai - Episode 1

The "Super Peace Busters"
Episode Rating: ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆ (3/5)

Depressing episode is depressing. This episode was sad in so many ways that I'm not sure I want to continue watching it. The story starts out with the main character, Jinta, playing games on a hot summer day. It is obvious that he is a hikikomori. While he is playing his game, a girl comes out of nowhere and starts talking to him. She later reveals herself as Menma (Honma Meiko), one of Jinta's childhood friends. After passing out from the heat and regaining consciousness, the doorbell rings and Jintan tries restraining Menma from opening it. The person at the door turned out to be Anaru (Anjo, Naruko). What got me suspicious was that she couldn't see Menma. After that moment, I realized that Jinta was the only one who could see Menma. What I didn't know was why. The reason why Anaru came was to give Jinta his homework. As a hikikomori, Jinta obviously doesn't want to do any work. What Menma didn't understand at that time is that everyone changed over the years the six of them were apart. Anaru had become interested in fashion like most teenage girls.

Later in the day, the two of them decide to go on a walk. During their walk, Menma starts jumping on a fence and accidentally slips. At that moment, a flashback showed Jinta being told something about Menma. My guess is it was about her death. Yes, Menma is dead and the only reason Jinta can see her is because he is envisioning her. After a useless attempt to save her from falling (which is unnecessary because she is already dead), he bumps into Yukiatsu (Matsuyuki Atsumu) and Tsuroko (Tsurumi Chiroko), both his childhood friends. Both Yukiatsu and Tsuroko had become absorbed in their studies and are most likely very intelligent. Yukiatsu then asks Jinta if anything has infected his brain because he doesn't go to school and talks to Menma like she's still alive. This really made Jinta mad and the only way he felt he could deal with this situation was to run away. After running for a while, he told Menma that she was a bother to him. Back at home, Jinta recalls the fun summers in the past. He also recalls the day where, after being asked if he liked Menma, he said he could "never like someone boring like...". He had cut his sentence right after he realized what he was saying. Expecting Menma to cry because of his insult, he was surprised when she just shrugged it off and smiled. Deep down, he wanted to apologize to her the next day. Unfortunately, that next day would never come. Menma also dies that day. I found this part of the episode to be the most depressing.

While he is recalling his past, Menma also visits her past. She does that by going back to the house she used to live in before she died. While no one notices her, she still sees that her mother cares about her, remembering that her daughter's favorite food was curry. It was sad to see how Menma wanted to talk to her family but couldn't. Back at JInta's place, after musing over his past, he decides to go find Menma. Thinking that she would be at the clubhouse they used to hangout at, he runs there as fast as he can, hoping that he can see her and finally apologize. When he gets there, he is disappointed to see no one there. That is until he hears a voice, turns around, and is greeted by the the last of his childhood friends, Poppo (real name unknown), who is into erotic magazines. All his childhood friends have changed a lot. It is now up to Jinta to grant Menma's wish of reuniting them. The journey of granting her wish will definitely be filled with hardships and difficulties. To overcome them, they have to come together like they did in the past. Looking forward to how all this unfolds.
