Hyouka - Episode 20
Ah, the good 'ol New Year's episode where another piece of Japanese culture is depicted for all foreigners (and Japanese shut-ins) to see. Activities like New Year's prayers, fortune drawing, and the consumption of traditional food and drink like mochi and sake respectively, make their appearances in anime once again. But it's not the presence of these events that made the episode enjoyable. In fact, the New Year's celebrations were essentially used to set a lovely mood in which the generally agreed upon OTP of the series could once again showcase how perfect of a couple they are.
In keeping with the trend of the last two episodes, this episode was also focused primarily on Hōtarō and Eru. The overused "locked in a storage room alone with a member of the opposite sex" situation comes into play once again, but luckily, the two manage to escape without being questioned or creating a misunderstanding, thanks to Hōtarō and Satoshi's knowledge on a particular historical drama. Speaking of that, when Hōtarō explained to Eru about the "trapped like a rat" message, we got treated to a quick history lesson regarding the Siege of Kanegasaki—a good example showing how anime can be educational at times. And as expected, everything ends on a positive note.
As if three episodes of Hōtarō x Eru weren't enough, the season finale (?) seems to be more or less the same note. But this time, the ultimate chance for the two (more so Eru) to express their feelings has arrived—yes, it's Valentine's Day. What better way to end off the series than with the two of them officially starting to date? The icing on the cake would be for Satoshi and Mayaka to get together, although given Satoshi's carefree personality, this probably won't happen. Regardless of what happens, I have a feeling it's still going to be an enjoyable episode nonetheless. Looking forward to it.
