Hanasaku Iroha - Episode 7

I don't think roaring waves resemble death in any way...
Episode Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ (4/5)

This episode consisted of more comedy than drama which is nice once in a while. The presence of crazy stalker-like characters usually brings tons of laughs and this was no different. I really enjoyed the whole process of Tomoe contemplating whether to keep or quit her job, with the plan of getting fired eventually backfiring due to unintentionally making the crazy stalker-like guests' stay more enjoyable. Even though she didn't know it, Tomoe actually proved that "fighting fire with fire" actually works as she got the guests to surrender after acting crazy just like them. With this episode being full of comedy, the next episode seems to take a 180 degrees turn. Judging from the preview, Ohana's grandmother needs to go the hospital which ultimately puts the Kissui Inn's future at stake. But for now, here is this episode's summary:

Early one morning, Tomoe receives a phone call from her mother who informs her that a marriage interview has been arranged. Just like a typical mother, Tomoe's mother did this so she could have a chance to see her grandchild's face before she dies. However, Tomoe doesn't really care much about marriage yet and is annoyed at how her mother keeps bringing the topic up. While making her way to the inn, she wonders if it is a good idea to still keep the job. As she starts cleaning a bit, she can't help but envy Nako and Ohana, who passed by her as they were heading out the door to school, because of their youth. Their ability to do so many things and still have time made her feel dead inside. Right when she thought she was alone and started to act like a fool, the landlady showed up and scolded her. After calming herself down again, Tomoe hears some bad news from the landlady. Those guests were coming again. The emphasis on "those" made Tomoe realize that things will start to get crazy around here.

Later that day, those guests make a brief appearance in the form of stalkers. Their first target was Nako. After hearing the bushes rustling behind her while walking with Ohana, she gets so scared that she quickly runs away, screaming. Ohana on the other hand, had no idea what was going on and just stood there, unaffected by the idea of stalkers. After she gets away, the stalkers, who talk like soldiers on a mission, start running towards Kissui Inn. I guess those guests have now been revealed. Back at the inn, Tomoe explains the Ohana and Nako that the "stalkers" are actually called "survival gamers" who have been regulars at the inn for the past two years. Unfortunately, their behavior is crazy and unlike those of normal customers. That night, while Ohana was enjoying herself inside hot spring, two of the survival gamers begin to initiate their plan to infiltrate the hot spring. Luckily for Ohana, Tomoe happened to be walking by and scared the survival gamers away.

After thinking about her future a bit more, Tomoe heads over to the landlady's office and attempts to tell her about the marriage interview. Unfortunately, Enishi interrupts her and even guessed that it was a marriage interview. Her response to his comment to growl menacingly at him, causing him to quickly mind his own business and get back to work. In the end, she was unable to voice her thoughts and told the landlady to forget about it. Upon exiting the landlady's office, Tomoe sees Ohana and Nako running towards her. Nako goes on to explain that the survival gamers are talking her even inside the inn. Unfortunately, because customers are something that the inn really needs now, Ohana's suggestion of kicking them out is rejected. Their conversation is cut short when Nako notices the survival gamers looking at her again from around the corner of the hallway and runs away again, with Ohana following her. As the two girls start running, the survival gamers begin to run after them, despite Tomoe's request for them to stop. After a tiring day at work, Tomoe is finally able to relax in the comfort of her own home, away from the stresses of the workplace. While enjoying a nice can of beer, she watches an old war show on the television and is inspired to get fired by harassing the survival gamers so she can leave without quitting while also relieving Nako and Ohana at the same time. With her seemingly foolproof plan ready, she decides to put it into action the next day. Little did she know that the result will be not what she expects.

The next day, Ohana and Nako tell Tomoe that the survival gamers won't wake up to eat their breakfast. With a devilish grin on her face, Tomoe decides it is time to execute her plan. While walking into the room, she starts slamming a metal bucket with what looked like a small pot. Instead of receiving annoyed responses, all the survival gamers attentively stood up and awaited their next order from their "commander", shocking Tomoe. After the survival gamers leave the room so breakfast can be served, Nako and Ohana praise Tomoe for her ability to make those survival gamers obey her orders. Unfortunately, this was the opposite of what Tomoe wanted to happen. A while later, a second problem occurs; this time it was about food. Instead of eating the onigiri that the kitchen staff made, the survival gamers insisted on only eating rations. However, once Tomoe stepped in and told them that Minko made them, the survival gamers decided to take a bite. After the first bite, they were all amazed at how delicious it was and quickly asked for seconds, making Minko extremely happy. Once again, Tomoe is praised by Ohana and Nako. And, once again, she didn't know where her plan to annoy the survival gamers went wrong. Later in the day, when the survival gamers were once again planning to sneak into the hot springs, Tomoe decided that what she was about to do would definitely get her fired. When the survival gamers analyzed the area and deemed it safe to continue, they all rushed into the hot spring at full speed. Unfortunately for them, Tomoe was ready with a hose and sprayed forced them to retreat. As a side note, Jiroumaru-san was in the hot spring at the time and got shot many times by the fake bullets coming out of the survival gamers' guns, causing him to faint. For the third time, Ohana and Nako commented on how awesome Tomoe was when she manhandled those survival gamers. This time, however, Tomoe believed her actions would result in getting fired.

As she walks to towards the lobby, she sees the survival gamers taking to the landlady as they are about to leave. Thinking that it was best if she apologized before getting fired, she walks up to them and apologizes. However, the landlady does not know what Tomoe was talking about because the survival gamers must have been talking about how much they enjoyed their stay. Amidst their compliments, Tomoe was speechless, unable to comprehend why she was being praised for what she did. Before leaving, they salute to Tomoe and tell her that they will penetrate her defenses next time. Realizing that the job at the inn is the right thing for her, she salutes them back, telling them she awaits their next arrival. Back at the staff room, Ohana and Nako praise her once again for her actions and decide to call her "Tomoe-neesan" from now on because they felt that she emitted a 'older sister vibe'. However this embarrassed Tomoe a lot. Back at her house, Tomoe calls her mother and tells her that she is not going to the marriage interview because she realized that the job at the inn suits her well. However, she does promise her mother that she will be able to see the faces of her grandchildren before she dies. And this ends the surprisingly funny episode. With the anime focusing mostly on drama, I found a comedic episode to be refreshing. Looking forward to the next episode where the usual drama makes its return.
