*sigh*, was a cliffhanger really the right thing to have for such a dramatic anime? Now I can't wait for next week to be here. There are so many different possible outcomes that I have read/thought of regarding what Yukiatsu said at the end of the episode. Personally, I think he's trolling Jinta by saying he can see Menma too. I'll just have to wait one whole week to see if I'm right or wrong.
The episode begins with Poppo "relieving himself" near a tree. As he is doing that, he catches a glimpse of someone walking on the other side of a bunch of trees. When he takes a closer look, he is shocked to see that this person was wearing the exact same clothes Menma wore when they were still children. Fast-forward to the next morning. Jinta's father just asked Jinta if he was going to school today. As expected, Jinta does not feel like going and wishes that his father would scold him for not going instead of accepting his hikikomori lifestyle. All of a sudden, Menma jumps on him and demands him to go to school so he can pay Anaru back for helping him with Nokemon thing and possibly grant her "wish". In order to stop Menma from complaining, Jinta had no choice but to go to school.
While on his way to school, he bumps into Anaru. She was actually surprised that he came but he already started having second thoughts about coming even before reaching the school gates. To make things worse, Anaru's "I'm ugly so I insult people to make myself feel better" friends show up and start hurling insults at Jinta. In the end, he decides not to go to school. While her "friends" were insulting him, Anaru couldn't decide whose side to take and weakly tried to stop the insults. Meanwhile, back at Jinta's house, Menma gets bored of being alone and decides to explore Jinta's house. The first room she explores contains the memorial of Jinta's mom, who passed away when Jinta was still young. After talking to the picture of Jinta's mom for a while, Menma suddenly starts crying and doesn't know why. For some reason, I found that scene quite sad. After cooling off a bit, Jinta heads over to the secret base where Poppo stays at. There, Poppo excitedly tells Jinta that he saw Menma last night. After hearing Poppo describe his encounter with Menma, Jinta hurriedly rushes home with the excuse of "I need to make dinner". What Poppo said must have triggered something in his mind. When he gets home, he lies to Menma by telling her that school ended early. In the kitchen, he is surprised to see the result of Menma's attempt to replicate his mother's famous steamed bread that all the Super Peace Busters loved. A flashback shows that Jinta was mad at his mom when she said she couldn't make them while she was in the hospital. As the two eat Menma's steamed bread, Jinta tells Menma that Poppo saw her last night. However, Menma said that was impossible because she was at Jinta's house the whole night. The only explanation they could come up with was that Poppo saw Menma's ghost (which would mean the Menma that Jinta is talking to now is not a ghost but something else). Jinta is now even more confused and is unable to make sense of any of this.
Meanwhile, Yukiatsu and Tsuruko are at a store together. While browsing for a gift, Yukiatsu gets a text from Poppo who tells him that he found Menma. Shortly after, a store employee thinks Tsuruko is Yukiatsu's girlfriend and asked if she could help him with searching for a present. Annoyed by that comment, Tsuruko gives the poor employee the cold shoulder. After the employee leaves the two alone, Tsuruko asks Yukiatsu who he is giving the gifts he buys to but he refuses to tell her. My guess is that it has something to do with his secret Menma obsession. Early next morning, Jinta receives an invitation from Poppo for a "Search for Menma"Association BBQ Dinner. At first, he is hesitant about going but Menma uses her "this could be my wish" excuse which forces Jinta to go. At school, Anaru is invited by her friends to go to a karaoke box after school but she chooses to go to the BBQ Dinner instead.
One by one, the members of the Super Peace Busters start arriving at the secret base. At the start of the evening, only Yukiatsu was missing. However, Tsuruko assured everyone that he would eventually come. As the group is enjoying their lame BBQ with only sausages and kheer (rice boiled in milk), Tsuruko brings up the topic of "Menma's wish". After some hesitation, Anaru tells the group that she believes what Jinta had said about Menma wanting her wish to be granted. Then, Tsuruko also tells the group that she will believe it too. Now only one member remains. Shortly after, Yukiatsu finally shows up with real BBQ ingredients. After he puts down his bags of ingredients, he shocks the group by telling them he saw Menma too. He then tells them that he saw her near the creek and Poppo, Menma and Anaru rush towards it. With Jinta still left behind by the others, Yukiatsu takes the opportunity to tell Jinta that he can also see Menma. My guess is that he's trolling. Unfortunately, the episode ends with this frustrating cliffhanger. Really looking forward to the next episode because, judging from the preview, it will be filled with lots of drama.
